A fun activity I did in Rome was “cooking classes in Rome pizza and pasta school”. You learn how to make stuff and then you eat it and there’s wine. Win win.
I just got back from Rome. We were there for four days. It was great!! It was just hubs and I though.
For areas to stay - I would stay in the city center as most things are walkable from there. We stayed near piazza navona
Places to eat - if you want to get away from the tourists I’d suggest checking out trastevere for places to eat. Lots of different options within walking distance of one another. We really enjoyed a meal at osteria di’zumberto.
Things to do - suggest doing the organized tours if you’re into history. We did a walking tour the first day that was pay what you want. Then did Vatican and also a bike tour at night. We also did a cooking class which was fun!
Again, you can walk or take a bus to most places, we did not do the hop on/hop off thing.
That is a lot to do in a week, especially with kids. You lose a lot of time in lines for the big attractions.
I’d do two cities tops - Florence and Rome, probably - if you have flexibility on which you fly into.
Milan will be less fun for kids from what I’ve heard (I haven’t been).
Too much. I did Venice, Florence, and Rome over a week/10 days (can’t remember but it felt rushed). Florence is the best and deserves more time for just the food alone. Venice can probably be done in 1-1.5 days tbh. Milan I’ve heard needs like 2-3. So I’d narrow down to 2.
I felt kinda bored in Venice? But I was also in college studying abroad and not as great a trip planner as I am now so maybe I’m missing something. But I had a lot of friends from Milan who recommended more time there. But either way, OP is asking for way too much in too little time
That is a lot of great cities for only 7 days. Unless you love the rushed vacations, I strongly suggest trying to cut one, or if I had to spend less time at certain cities, it would be Milan and Florence (even though I love Florence, pretty small)
I’d pick Rome and Florence personally but I agree. Way too much!
There really isnt that much to do in Milan. You can see the key attractions in a day easily, the only reason to stay would be for the high-end shopping if you are into that. I would split this trip in half and either do Milan and Venice (which also doesn’t need a TON of time) along with some outdoor activities in Northern Italy (the Dolomites and the lakes are A-MAZ-ING) or do Florence and Rome. Depends how much you like city breaks.
That’s too much! I would highly suggest cutting down to 2 cities if possible. Is this your first time in italy?
That is a lot of cities for a week. Keep in mind travel takes a lot of time between the cities. I would recommend cutting off one city (prob Milan unless you are into shopping !!)
For all the tourist spots (Vatican, Uffizi, basilica etc) buy tickets in advance from TripAdvisor or viator - saves a lot of time
Would echo the comments to cut Milan. Florence is awesome, studied abroad there and couldn’t get enough of the history even tho I’m usually not an art guy. Checklist there would be the Duomo (buy the ticket to go to the top, very worth it), Santa Croce Cathedral (where Micheaveli, Michelangelo, Galileo are buried in the church), Santa Maria Novella is the other main church, cool if you’re into it but not as necessary as the other two. Spend a sunset at Pizza Michelangelo looking over the skyline of Florence (google it) with a bottle of wine. The uffitzi is the classic art museum that you should visit if you can. The whole city is walkable which is incredible, Bobli gardens are the palace over there are cool too. As a family vacation just make sure the kids get Gelato once a day and everyone will be a lot happier lol. I was a volunteer tour guide at the Duomo over there so happy to share some easily digestible fun facts over PM. Enjoy your trip!!
And the David of course! Fun fact that is was originally commissioned to be placed on top of the Duomo (like the base of the dome), which is why the proportions are so off. It was made to look like normal proportions from that height. Also the church was started without a architectural advancements to complete the dome, so it sat semi-finished for 30+ years until Brunelleschi found the solution. The epitome of “we’ll cross that bridge when we get there” lol
All Antico Vinaio for a restaurant in Florence!! Best sandwich I’ve ever tasted. There’s a line but it is so worth it!
Also if you have time in Venice, take a day trip to Burano !!!
I found Venice and Florence overhyped. Rome is amazing. Look into Naples and Pompei if you feel that may be something you might like.
I would cut Milan and start your trip with Venice. I used to live in the Veneto region. Venice is cute but it’s not a real city. Only 60k people live there and 90% is filled with tourists. It’s gorgeous but it’s basically Epcot. You could do a couple days there and then I’d recommend some day trips: 1. Burano - beautiful island with colorful houses. 2. Murano - island known for glass making and 3. Verona- only 1 hour away using a 7euro commuter train. It is the perfect Italian city, an ancient Roman city with gorgeous architecture and wonderful restaurants but barely any tourists. Italians call it “little Roma” because it looks like Rome but calmer and cleaner
Milan is over rated
Id do Rome and Florence only!
I just did a similar trip. In Florence get the 4 cheese gnocchi at Osteria Santo Spirito. Best gnocchi you’ll have in your life!
I literally did that exact same trip, Milan > Venice > Florence > Rome, about 2 years ago. Went with my brother and a friend and had an awesome time. However, we did the trip in 2 weeks. Here are my takeaways:
- Milan is a metropolitan city with not a lot of tourist type things to do. Checking out the Duomo is about it. The Navigili river district has a great vibe. If you spend more than one day in Milan, take a day trip to Lake Como. You won’t regret it.
- Venice is a day trip at best (pre-COVID at least. It might not be as touristy now) Please don’t waste a ton of time there, even tho it’s really picturesque. The city is basically a giant outdoor museum/tourist trap.
-Florence is where I would recommend spending the most time. It has a ton of history, amazing Tucsan food, and some of the beet museums in the world. Spent 4 days there and loved it.
-Rome could be a day trip if you pack in all of the main sites: Coliseum, Spanish steps, etc. It’s also a big city with plenty of things to do, but it really depends on what you want out of your Italy trip. Spent 3 days there, but could have done less and would’ve been ok with it.
Overall, I think 7 days is doable, but if you decide to do all of these cities, this is my recommendation:
Milan: 2 days (day trip to Como if you want)
Venice: half day/day trip
Florence: 2 days
Rome: 2 days
Not at all!
You can go to Milan and Venice in 1 day, but choose between Rome and Florence.
I go to Milan almost twice every year because my husband is Milanese . I will send you recommendations of places to go. I have to figure out how to DM you
Milan is a beautiful city with many hidden charms. The aperitivo was invented there. Negroni, Aperol spritz!! Shopping and amazing food. Il Duomo and La Galleria!
We did Rome, Florence, Siena and Venice in about 10 days. 3 days Rome, 4 days Florence, 1 day Siena and 2 days Venice. Siena is an easy day drip from Florence.
If you’re booking Milan, see the last supper but know you have to get tickets way ahead of time
Ooo it will be with my mom and my sister we are all grown ups haha and we were thinking one day in Milan, Venice and rest in Florence and Rome is that still too much? We looked at each area and decided we didn’t want to spend more than a day. Or should I just do Florence and Rome? It’s our first time
Agree wirh the others....Milan is skippable unless ur super into fashion or want to see the duomo cathedral. I only spent a day in Venice and thought that was fine.
