Do you have a visa? Requirements may have changed but when I was in China you had to have a visa to even leave the Shanghai airport. Beyond that, shower and refresh yourself in the lounge and go to the Bund- eat soup dumplings and just be a tourist along the river do a couple of hours. Enjoy!
when i went two years ago, you can request a 24-72 hour visa at the airport if you are a US citizen or from other specific European countries. however, you need to have planned where you’ll be staying (e.g., hotel). it goes on the visa and if you don’t know, then you have to go to police station to tell them where you’ll be staying right after leaving the airport - so easier to just reserve a hotel room beforehand. the hotel has to report you’re staying there to the police too. i echo all the suggestions above! enjoy time around the Bund!
Shanghai tower, the bund, seafood, jade temple is pretty kool. But that’s gonna be rough since it takes a long time to get thru custom (assuming you have Chinese visa)
