Planning for the future is important, because most employers do not offer a pension. Instead, 401k and other deferred compensation programs.

If you are overemployed or considering overemployment, do you rely on your employers to fund your 401k or do you set up & fund your own "retirement" account?

I do both. I max out both matches, do stock buy in options, and other after tax investments

It sounds like you have a really great plan and will be able to enjoy retirement!

One of my employers offers a much better 401k match so I do my retirement savings through them. I don't see why i wouldn't participate in it if they're offering it. But I guess I have to stay for a certain amount of time to guarantee that I get their contribution. Still, a good deal if you have an employer offering a match

I agree with taking advantage of extra help with funding for your future. Contribute as much as you can within IRS guidelines along with the employer contribution and you will reach your goal quicker!

I will go through the company for the 401k match always, however I do have a retirement account outside of that. I started it when I was doing freelance work and didn’t have that as an included benefit. Will keep both going although the work one gets a lot more attention currently.

I have always believed that multiple accounts are better than relying on just one. Putting your eggs in one basket may work against you.

Making a lot of money relative to the average but feeling poor? Median after-tax income was ~$55,000 in 1981 and was ~$73,000 in 2020. Using a Bank of Canada inflation calculator $55,000 in 1981 is equivalent to ~$165,000 today, which would put someone in the top 10% of earners today. But in 1981 the median family had that extra money. Who can I blame?

What’s a good baseline amount to keep in a checking account? I generally keep mine pretty low <1000 after paying CCs then dump the rest in savings. As I’m building a rainy day fund and then I will start contributing my brokerage account.

The first rule of overemployment is dont talk about overemployment to anyone outside your house. :). Second: always protect the main job. Third: As the main job always has the priority, the Second and third jobs must preferably be contract gigs with not too many meetings everyday. Remember: another day, another dollar.
