We did same time. While I understand the benefits of spreading it out, I wouldn't trade that time together for anything and would do it the same way again
Guy in my team is doing this now; he and his wife are going to pass the baton, she use all of hers first and then he will start his when she goes back to work.
Honestly if it was me, I might insert a week of overlap where we’re both off at the same time, to have some time together and leave a longer tail for the transition so it’s not as abrupt over a weekend.
I took it with my wife, but not all from the start. We live in Canada, so my wife had 11 months.
I took 2-3 weeks when the baby was born, then an extra 2 months when the baby was between 7 and 9 months old. It lined up with summer time, and we were able to do more family activities then. We also took a 3-week trip to Japan with the baby during that time.
We had our first child 2 years ago and decided to take time off together. Getting in sync about caring for our daughter (and my wife’s recovery from emergency c-section) was super important. We also had plenty of family support in the area and we weren’t trying to delay starting daycare (my MIL took care of her after we went back to work).
For all of my kids my wife took her 3 months and I took 1-2 weeks vacation at birth, then I followed with 2 months paternity leave after hers ended. This worked amazingly for us. It was much easier for my wife to go back to work knowing the children were with me and they didn’t start daycare until 5 months instead of just 3 months. Also, it was amazing bonding time to be alone with the children for a couple months. Initially they always want mom for obvious reason, so I don’t think I could have bonded the same way without all that one on one time.
