Depends on your lifestyle and where you want to live. Brickell / Downtown is ~$2000/month for rent, if you’re living without a roommate, bump that up to $2500.
As for how much you spend on other stuff, your lifestyle will dictate that. Miami is not a cheap city, it’s New York City 2.0.
85k is by no means a little amount of money, but unfortunately doesn’t get you very far in Miami
Coral Gables is an expensive area. North Miami is more realistic.
I have lived in both places. I lived in Miami for 8 years and recently moved to Texas. 80K-85K is a crap salary. Do not go unless they offer $100K. Everything ins South Florida is more expensive: groceries, gas for car, car insurance, rent, renters insurance etc. My car insurance when I left Miami went down by $500. I lived in Miami when the $80K salary would have been feasible and then when everyone started to move to Miami it became unattainable. Unless you end up with a roommate expect to pay over $2500 for rent alone. That does not include your renters insurance, a trash fee, pest control or any other fees that the building has (and does not advertise them outright) I lived Downtown when I first moved there, also lived out in Midtown, Miami Beach, South Miami and finally Miami Lakes.
The rent in Coral Gables will be at minimum double then Downtown. Brickell is about the same as Coral Gables. North Miami is cheaper but is being gentrified (read here not safe in certain streets and safe on others). The Beach will be by far the cheapest option but trying to get off the island during peak traffic times is a PAIN. Miami Lakes is also nice and cheaper too but it is a suburb of Miami.
Also when it rains in Miami it is a Monsoon EVERY TIME. There is no such thing as a light rain in Miami. This means it floods everywhere. My Miami Beach apartment flooded. So if you move out there make sure to get something on the 2nd floor. Your car will flood as there is mostly street parking out on the Beach. For the Downtown and Brickell areas all of the garages for the apartments are located on the ground through 3 or 4th floors. They will flood. If you have more questions send me a message.
I don’t think it’ll take you far unless you live somewhere other than Miami Miami. Every time I do grocery shopping I cry.
Oh boy, this is my dream city to move to (my 2nd chance as well) but man. It’s sounding like it’s hard out there.
Do not move here with an 85k salary!!!
Definitely not for Miami
It won't get you too far here, but if you have a simple lifestyle, you can live comfortably.
