I recently interviewed for L7 EM at Google and had 4 great interviews and one not so great system design. I submitted external referrals all of which gave great feedback. I packed up and moved across country ten years ago to take care of my grandma while she was in the late stages of her battle with dementia. Pretty miserable, trying time, and I guess being so emotionally deadened made it easier than normal for me to get out of my comfort zone and just start putting myself out there. I went to a bunch of networking events, cold messaged hiring managers, basically shamelessly shilled myself. Ended up finding a great job within two months, stayed there for a couple years, then left for an even better one. I don't have any great advice other than to push past any embarrassment doing all that might make you feel and put yourself out there anyway. No one is going to give you anything or advocate on your behalf. You've got to do it yourself.
