Los Angeles, 5 years exp - best offers I've received are all from in house setups. I'm currently in house as well and prefer it to agency side.
Pluses: better pay, big bonuses, better work life balance, less concern over margins/costs, bigger emphasis on constantly evolving best practices, and better collaboration with multiple teams such as creative, media, and data sciences.
Cons: less opportunity to move up, having to sometimes sacrifice data for artistic decisions, having to explain basic digital concepts and the value prop of programmatic to coworkers
This 👆 ... I would add that when testing branded campaigns, you really have to prove out cutting campaign ads with data or creating new iterations. Even so, you get a ton of pushback from CD’s or Brand Directors, hence the artistic comment. As a result, you can become complacent at times.
I just left the agency side for in house and can confirm it’s way better. The agency life wasn’t as bad as the horror stories, but in-house has been a much better experience overall.
Hey! Most desirable for me would certainly be in house,m. Agency is a gamble - some can be amazing but others can be really awful, just depends on the leadership. That said, I’m at a middle-of-the-pack agency now. Not horrid, but not great.
Always wanted to switch to in-house as well!
