On principle, sure. But practically, who funds it? Salaries are correlated with the financial viability of the business. Most public interest is not revenue generating, hence low compensation.
How is it the lawyers fault? Really tone deaf
As a career public servant, I actually agree with this take. Wouldn't necessarily call it a martyr complex per se, but there are mental gymnastics being done to justify the low pay and high stress - at least coming from a prosecutor/public defender perspective. The nobility is a double edged sword

These folks usually have a trust fund. And there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s god’s work and I applaud them for doing it.
I have definitely seen some public interest attorneys who have full trust funds or a partner/ spouse that is a high earner and others who are first generation from lower income backgrounds. But when earnings or hours are brought up, there is definitely a weird thing that happens at the non profits where nothing really gets fixed but just talked about in an endless cycle .
