Question for other managers here > what is the worst rationale someone on your team has given you to request a raise?

Someone on my team asked for a raise because they haven’t taken a vacation day in 3 years. Our company offers 4 weeks PTO and I have never had to reject a request before. Judging by the offhanded comments they make about their personal life, they just really don’t like their spouse…

Not taking PTO for that long is a red flag used by audit; especially if they handle funds.

Worst reasons are those non-work related or enhancing like buying a home or vehicle etc.

Was that their only reasoning? Because if that was just one of several justifications they used, I wouldn't necessarily count them out because of that and their marital status doesn't really matter in the negotiation conversation. I had one person request a raise because they got a degree. In marketing. While we're engineers. I think he thought any degree would be a good reason to make more money.

That was the only reason… and I agree that their marital status doesn’t matter, it was just an observation/context for the strange discussion.

I guess props to your person for following through with a degree, but an unrelated degree isn’t a reason for a raise

Worst reasons that I’ve seen are: wanting to buy something for a SO, wanting to find a house project.

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

I’m currently in the process of being converted from contractor to permanent. In my initial conversations I was under the impression that I was in a different pay grade and asked for a salary 25k higher than the max allotted for my position. I feel like it gave the impression that I don’t know what I’m doing. Any suggestion how I can recover from this?

Cash bonuses, raises, profit-sharing, company equity, 401k match, etc.

Got offered 68k after 2 years as a contractor (62.5k) doing project management/business admin in a tech department at a Fortune 500 bank. I have an A.S degree and working on my bachelor’s/masters may 2024. I negotiated to 84k NYC. I have seen interns get offered 38 per hour (79k) for internship positions with a similar role.

Thoughts? Should I go higher? I do my job well that’s why they decided to keep me as a contractor after my internship.
