I moved from strategy consulting to an in-house Insight role (my strategy work before was heavily underpinned by research and insight). Miles better WLB, doesn’t even compare. Better ownership of work, I get the space to do my job and I get recognised for it. Better compensation and benefits package. Better everything!
I would never voluntarily go back to agency roles unless I was forced by circumstances. I am hoping to stay in in-house roles for the remainder of my career.
The only thing I will say, progression isn’t as clear cut as in agency / consulting roles, where you have a clear ascension with a clear hierarchy of roles. In-house, you may be the only or one of the few professionals of your particular discipline, so your title may not necessarily change even if your role itself grows in scope. But you will likely get regular pay increases. So it depends if that matters to you. Personally, I don’t care much about the title so long as I have influence, ownership and a fair pay that gets increased as my scope of work grows.
Also, there’s politics, red tape, things move slower. So again, it depends on whether or not you are comfortable with that.
Thank you for all the details, I appreciate your honesty!
