Rant time -
We had close to 20 non grads who were going to make up their deficient credits and be ready for summer graduation. I just checked their status - they went from an average GPA of a .86 (yes you read that correctly ) to a 3.7. These students are cranking out 9 full semester classes in three weeks thanks to on-line credit recovery courses that teaches how to click the "Next Lesson" button after cheating the answers with AI. 90 units in 4 weeks ? We are complicit in this charade.

Yes! You nailed the issue and the student body is catching on… kids are not attending class regularly because you can do the work at home online.

Your rant is now getting me ranting, but we’re both ranting to the wrong folks. I manage one of my district’s virtual programs and I do agree with you, but there are three systemic problems here. First, what interventions were in place that were employed over the last four years to prevent 20 kids from being in that situation? Secondly, students in online platforms must be monitored and applicable methods within the platform used to prevent the cheating. Perfect? No, but it appears all safeguards were turned off or ignored and whoever was in charge looked the other way. Why would they do that? Because third, it is clear that graduation rates are more important than the validity of the diploma presented. To be clear, I am all in favor of helping kids get the diploma and also believe online platforms provide schools options. And I also believe the concept that some students will always try to game the system, but if it is as you describe, the folks in charge and the program should be investigated by an outside entity. Last year I had one senior who AI’ed all of his English 12 essays. It wasn’t hard to figure it out. I failed him and made him retake the entire class. I have three students who did not finish and missed out on their last chance for a diploma because our standard is the standard and giving a diploma to three kids that didn’t actually earn it cheapens all of the diplomas we have ever presented. Ranting won’t solve this problem. Only somebody who cares about the integrity of your school can. Thus endeth my rant.

I’ve mentioned this to a few school counselors (one was the students counselor and the response was oh….??) I spoke to my dept chair. As teachers we must go through the chain of commands and that would be my dept chair first. I just spoke to the counselor about it because that was his counselor. Other than that, the buck stops there for me. I’m not allowed to break the chain of commands & yes! I have been versed on that and I’ve got in trouble for going above the order. Yes! It’s crazy!

Unfortunately, until the system rewards hard work and effort, this will remain the norm. At my old school, it was all about getting the graduation rate to 100% (or as close as possible). Students were passed along at the end of each semester by putting in just the slightest amount of effort during finals week. As long as the graduation specialist and the principal were satisfied with the graduation rate, no one cared whether the kids actually earned the diploma. My last year there, it was common for kids to retort with things like, "I am still on track to graduate." Or, "Your class isn't required." And of course, "I can fail four classes and still graduate." Most parents are as bad, if not worse, than the kids. It is a failing system.

Yep!! Not only is it a scam, but it also teaches kids that there are really no consequences for their choices. They can complete 9 months of school in less than a month so why should anyone choose the 9 month method? They’re too young to know they are short changing themselves.

Hey fellow Disney Lovers,

I generally have a few lessons in which I can use Pixar shorts to teach students how to identify and discuss literary signposts, how to identify and explain the development of theme, character traits, and other narrative elements. What are some of your favorite shorts? I am trying to incorporate activities where my students get to choose their own clips for independent practice with these skills and need a variety to draw from.

Monday Morning rumination: unsolicited advise is criticism.

Much to reflect on with this topic. Last week I was told in a 1:1 with a new contact that I was “too direct”. After some time chewing on the conversation I was struggling to place the emotions I was feeling. Turns out I was feeling guilty and shame for being me, for taking up space. Lesson of the week: unsolicited advice is a criticism of you, a micro aggression of who you are, and being “too much”. What would you do??

When I asked recruiter that I do not have any knowledge he replied with then you would not be asses on these areas but rather on ML and Project Management.
What I am doubtful is how they can comprise with requirements?
