When I was trying for hireback I’d avoid these associates like the plague. Try to take work from others who actually give you face time in front of the partners/senior associates, and are pleasant to work for. Not worth it at a junior level.
On 3), I wasn't an intern, but I got so busy with other people I used lack of capacity to get off an associate's case who kept giving me shit she'd had for weeks and demanding a 12 hr turnaround. Don't throw them under a bus like I may or may not have done just a tiny bit because her lack of case management skills was setting everything on fire, but shop for other work, get sooooooo busy, and use a diplomatic "I'm swamped, could I connect you with xyz to help instead?"
I hate that this is happening to you. You deserve better. It’s great that you’re calling it out. Now, run.
Is it a single individual or the firm culture as a whole?
It’s a single individual, the other people I work with are generally very respectful.
I highly recommend having a sit down and going through a list of things you didn’t like and want your associate to change. That approach has worked for me
Trust your instincts. First priority is to get the hireback; then you can devote energy to help a colleague improve. I strongly agree with other advice to broaden your source of work to the point you can turn down high-risk low-value work from this person.
OP here, just a quick update for you guys. I went ahead and asked work from other people in the team. I now have so much to do, but the upside is that I’m able to legitimately turn down work from the Associate I was referring to in my original post.
Thank you all for the advice !
