So confused by the current rental market. I applied for an apartment, followed up with the broker who said 8 people applied for the same unit. Streeteasy barely has any new postings, but every tour I go on the brokers keep talking about all the units that they have available. Where are all these apartments?

I’m trying to break my lease. I have notified the management company of my intent to do so in writing. They are just refusing to respond and keep ignoring my follow-up emails. Do I have any recourse? Can they physically bar me from leaving?

PS: I have legal cause for being able to break the lease and I know that there is zero legal recourse they have.
