Definitely take the BCG offer - long term impact for your brand will be much more valuable than the manager title
Irrespective of the title, the work you’ll be doing at bcg will be more geared towards tech strategy. Think of long term enterprise system architecture design vs ‘ transformation project’ (SAP implementation).
A few years of that experience will serve you well rounding out your skill set. As a manager in the sap practice at PwC you’ll be doing the same implementation with but you be a work stream lead rather than team member.
Be prepared to be treated like a second rate citizen
If this is the goal don’t go to bcg. Students and young consulting professionals anyway overrate the brand.
Especially when thinking about roles outside strategy it’s a liability, not a plus for many
(Speaking as ex bcg now in industry)
Often you hear discussions that say things like “they have no clue” because it’s not just a consultant, but a consultant who jumped across industries - at least initially - and then also predominantly focused on strategy work.
Instead, there are many consultancies in which consultants can 1. Focus on an industry on day 1, 2. Specialise in specific domains. But more importantly, MBB typically are precluded from even being considered for what consultants would call “technical” roles. You have so many internal candidates and candidates from other firms to choose from and the question arises why go with someone who doesn *really* know what they are talking about.
I’m not saying I share this exact reasoning but simply say that I have heard similar discussions a gazillion times. (Don’t read this too negatively - of course there is acknowledgement that consultants work hard, tend to be smart, and can structure stuff but in forums like this I rarely see someone share the “industry perspective”)
BCG Plat Senior Consultant only pays $150K. Isn’t that lower than the PWC M pay?
Yes Ms at PwC make $190-$205k base.
