Salaried hospitality manager hired under a 40-hour expectation but consistently working 50–55+ hours due to scheduling, extended closings, and operational changes. Director of Ops said my contract may be updated to the company “standard” 50 hours — but with no increase in pay. Feeling the workload no longer matches compensation. Is this common? What’s the best way to advocate for fair pay or boundaries, and when does it make sense to explore other options?

You're probably misclassified under the DOL as exempt anyway. (If so, could be due back pay for overtime, etc.) Companies like to misclassify workers thinking they can get overtime for free but if the person isn't actually doing higher level exempt things, it can subject them to fines and backpay for it. I highly suggest talking to an employment lawyer in your state.

I wouldn’t say it’s common, but I’ve definitely seen it happen. Basically, they’re just piling extra work on you with no extra pay. If they aren’t willing to compensate you, I’d start exploring other options. Sounds to me like you’re being taken advantage of.

Hate to say it, but this happens a lot. Salary and you’ll “mostly” work 40 hours with a rare exception. Next thing you know, that exception is weekly. Try to outline that this isn’t what you agreed to, and you are open to a solution. If they aren’t receptive, explore other options. Has anything else changed or been misleading?

Paralegals: My firm is looking for a paralegal, and I see the job posting advertising the salary as $65-$75k, with benefits. Is this a good salary for a paralegal (Greater LA area)? I’m not the decision maker, but it’s been a few weeks with very few applicants. I’m curious if there’s something hurting the firm in its search.

Hadn’t noticed this sub before, and most of the threads are old so thought I’d ask a follow up - how has everyone been handling parenting with public accounting? I’ve got a toddler and my wife is an accountant (industry), and we only have a few immediate family in the country- but they have health concerns. Busy season was rough, things are looking better now as things return to normal. Still working crazy hours if you count the daycare duties on top of utilization targets.

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!

Does anyone have suggestions for what a salary should be for a Digital Marketing Analyst | Paid Social & Performance Media? I have 1 year of experience, the job asks for 0-1 year of experience. I feel I over meet the qualifications in some areas and just meet them in others. The recruiter said 50k is the salary the company is offer. I know I can negotiate. What are your thoughts on what the salary should be?

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?
