Good riddance, now agencies won’t be abused by the appliance group. And not to worry if you want to work on Samsung, they’ll need to hire agency talent to handle the business internally. Follow the money. Always feel bad for incumbents and the ensuing layoffs. Stay strong.
Chief
Worst client I ever worked with on a personal level. Abusive AF.
Rising Star
After years of consolidating, Verizon just massively shrunk their in house agency….and sent everything back out to agencies.
It’s just not a model for brave, innovative work. It’s great if you want to follow the brand guidelines to a tee. Once you’re part of the machine, and you’re not exposed to creative work on other brands and other ways of thinking, great work just doesn’t happen.
From what I can see great work just doesn’t happen either way much these days. And it definitely doesn’t happen at Samsung.
If this transition is anything like the Pfizer migrations these last couple of years, brace yourself.
Reach out to your personal network and start exploring additional opportunities. Like Producer 1 said, Samsung will need to hire agency talent and experts to help absorb the amount of work that’s going to be taken in-house.
Does this mean Cheil is going to do all the Samsung work?
I guess they’ll be hiring soon.
Please can you confirm some of the details here?
Does this mean into Cheil or full in-house?
And what markets and what type of creative work does this apply to?
Which network?
I hope if they are going to put everything through Cheil they are going to beef that place up. They seem like nice people, but every time I have to connect with them, it feels like there are some pretty big gaps in knowledge when it comes to some pretty 101 stuff.
It’s a shitshow. As is Samsung.
So dumb.
What agencies does this affect bbh? Leo Burnett? Are layoffs expected??
This applies to every holding?
There was an announcement by the new VP in June that he was going to “streamline” operations across all aspects of agency/client workflow. He moved pretty fast apparently.
It definitely applies to our holding company….
We lost an account like that when I was at C-K in Orlando. They gave us a 90-day notice in January, so we knew we’d lose the account in April.
However, in February, I was at an all-day recording and ran back to the agency for something at lunch. There were boxes in front of 26 office doors - my entire team was blindsided! But there wasn’t a box in front of mine. I was the only person left because I wrote all the radio and TV. (28 radio and 17 TV spots per week.)
It was surreal. I started getting freelance clients and was able to give my 2-week notice on April 1. On April 2, both CDs were let go - I’m pretty sure I would have been let go with them had I not given my notice! Instead, I left two weeks later and still got a month of severance.
My advice is to start looking for another job and picking up freelance - try Upwork.
I heard a lot of similar stories about C – K. In Milwaukee, New York, and Chicago. Their Chicago office has had a pattern stretching back around 10 years now of hiring an ECD to run the creative department and then firing them at exactly the 2-year point. But people still take the job lol. Heard similar things about New York office.
OP - what network?? Annoying that you are giving half info…
Don’t they have massive amounts of work spread across different agencies? What are the logistics of this switch?
Not sure. This is just what our CSuite messaged to us on Thursday.
We’ve been doing a massive campaign for them for next year. Does that mean they’ll take that away from us?!
Yes 💔
Sign of the times. Most big clients are doing the same, or cutting spending altogether and focusing on retail.
Good luck out there 😢
Seems like this is only for their social…
Seems like we’re not affected. We are doing ATL work for them.
Is this holding true? We’re still busy with Samsung over here at BBH.
Seems like you know something
My understanding is that this is only impacting Turner Duckworth
Huh that’s interesting. Not what we heard.
I wonder if they’ll divide up the workload across Cheil and their other owned agency, McKinney.
