Yes there is a reason. When the Green Line was built in the 90s the taxi lobbies fought hard to make sure it didn’t connect to the airport, which is why it stops a mile away and has a convoluted system of shuttle transfers to get to the airport.
The good thing is this is finally getting corrected with the people mover (under construction) and Crenshaw Line (opening this year hopefully)

Good information!!
They’re in the process of it. Also public transit in general sucks here
Even without the advent of ride-sharing, this city is far more livable without a car than it was just 10-20 years ago. Uber and Lyft have helped accelerated the move away from individual vehicle ownership.
Cuz LA never planned for public transit. Some dumbasses created the city
LA used to have an extensive street car system. The Huntington Library/Gardens are a giant estate that was built by a LA street car magnate that made his fortune partially by buying up and consolidating street cars back in the day. Of course it was all ripped out when the auto and oil companies got ahold of the political process. The 2028 LA Olympics have given impetus to do a lot of transit improvements -- at LAX where a light rail will take people from the terminals to a metro terminal off site, as well as an important connector line downtown that is sorely needed. Many other improvements as well.
A bit of a oversimplification on the streetcars getting ripped out. The streetcars were many different systems, built by different land developments, and then all effectively abandoned to the city as a huge unplanned, unprofitable mess. When they finally were ripped out they were a massive financial sinkhole, and the promise of discounts and subsidies from the bus manufacturers was a huge motivation.

Basically the oil, car, and tires companies got together and took down the railway that crossed LA - for greed. Then for decades the westside/Santa Monica wanted to keep the metro from reaching bc it would give too many people of color from the Eastside access to the area (many people who live in the beach areas forget that the beach doesn't belong to them) - it's public space, this has been a battle forever.
