Serious question: why do you care?
Got it. I think people have explained below, but I also think there’s been an exorbitant amount of pressure on people in the workplace over the last few years. As long as they have a narrative around it and they don’t make it weird or act strange, it’s fine. It’s crazy to think you have to go to work 5 days a week, every year, for 40 years, without interruption. That’s no life.
I think it is somewhat expected that at senior levels people get pushed out when new leadership arrives (e.g. a new ceo will bring in some of ‘their people’). I wouldn’t expect someone to lead with ‘I got fired’ when telling their story, so give them grace and accept their version of their history.
The ambiguity is the point. Fired, passed over for promotion, contract ran out, gardening leave, burned out. All valid reasons. It often takes time to get into another job at senior levels so the gaps can be longer. FWIW if they say they’re sailing around the world they probably are actually doing that, it’s just not the whole story.

Garden leave and golden parachute time.
^ that and also maybe its true..
Everyone lies about resume gaps, not just leaders. Do people buy it? Maybe, maybe not, it doesn’t really matter though.
The linkedin posts are insane these days. I saw someone make a post about going on vacation - literally a vacation - after a long project. And don’t even get me started on the people who make the “work” post about getting married (“I took on the biggest project of my life” kind of story). Maybe they did it to get ahead of the narrative and create a record for future recruiters. Who knows? Or maybe they are soft launching a coaching career? (Look what I did, and I’ll teach you how to do it, too)
