If you think it will make you happy, go for it!
Yes! A good nap above all else.
One thought here, based on a lot of personal experience and the experience of friends. Before you pay for more schooling and leave this field behind, be pretty sure that after the school you can actually get into the field you want AND at a level you will enjoy at this stage of your life.
A number of friends decided to get a Masters & go into various nonprofits, only to find they were competing for more junior level positions because they were “new” to that field, and others who had more nonprofit experience got the juicy positions. It is less likely that you will leave a semi senior advertising position & step in as SVP of a major nonprofit
I’m not criticizing your logic or motivation, I’m just saying, “know before you go.” If you are over 40, you can’t afford to be naive about your real value to another field or how fast you will move up.
No do it! Find something that actually matters and allows you to have a life. Wish I could figure out what I’m good at that isn’t advertising bc I’d jump ship immediately
Reading all of these comments makes me so sad. You should be able to make a decent living and do the world a favor at the same time. I started my agency 15 years ago with that mission and we’re doing well. Not making zillions but we sleep at night...
Was talking to a friend recently about how we feel like we've been in this industry forever (20 years) and are often looked at like we have nothing to offer while simultaneously having an additional 20 (or more) working years ahead of us. If you change careers now, you could have as much time or even longer in your new industry.
When you retire, will you be happier with 40+ years in advertising or 20 years in advertising and 20 years in this second career?
If you can afford it, do it. Then come back and tell us all about it.
Definitely do it. As long as you make enough to pay bills and live decently, the goal is to live a happy life.
I’m thinking of changing too. I want to help people and feel fulfilled.
Do it or use what you’ve cultivated to make the world a better place, NOW! You might surprise yourself to learn how your experience translates
Thanks for that perspective MP 1. Good point. Not too concerned about it. Taking the looooong view. What can I see myself doing for another 20-ish years and feeling like it mattered? That’s my criteria for “success” or something like it
I admire you for thinking ahead. Go for it!! I was in the agency biz for a while and realized that the lack of work life balance and stress was affecting my family. I started looking ahead. I went back to school & got my Masters in healthcare (chose this field b/c of personal situation). I transitioned this year, making A LOT less but built my life back, reset my relationship with my husband, my teenage son and myself. The 16 hour days were a killer. I realized my agency skills were super marketable. But You have to built a story for the new industry you are targeting to show them how it’s transferable. I’m pushing to make more $$ (currently making $125k less) and elevate my role. It will happen. I’m confident. But I have to pay my dues and sacrifice. I’m not lying, It’s a tough transition, the environment is less creative, but it’s the beginning of my transition. I’m lucky I have an amazing husband who is supporting me, otherwise I would be a huge hardship. But it’s the right move for me at 56. I’m done with the agency life.
No matter how you do it learning and continually investing/reinventing yourself is important. And like any student facing school and a career - what are you going for and what are your expectations with such a hefty investment? Do you have ways to start now, side projects, classes to get a taste of it?
You are ahead of the curve. Definitely go for it.
I stepped out of advertising and find that I still come back to the fundamentals when I’m working with organizations. I’m helping them understand advertising, psychology, mindsets, strategic approach but in social justice forums and it really makes a difference to them and to me. Go for it. You don’t have to burn any bridges. Life has a funny way of reminding you that you have a lot to offer if you let yourself
Not crazy at all
Noble idea, however do you really need to go back to school to do this?
Yes. I’m considering becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor - I could work in schools as a mental health advocate, or do marriage and family therapy, or work with addicts to help them recover. Unfortunately my portfolio school ‘certificate’ is recognised by exactly 0 state boards who regulate such licensure
Please do it and be my personal hero
Considering the exact same career move OP
Another idea is freelance, half the year and make your nut. Then donate your time and that sweet dirty ad money for good. Prob make the same money and might even make more of an impact. Also will allow you to dip your toes in before spending money on more schooling.
Mark Cuban recently said the best advice he was ever given was “Today is the youngest you will ever be. Live like it”. It’s a matter of perspective. Don’t shy away from what you really want based on how old you think you are. Create your own future starting now and 10 years from now, you won’t look back with regret.
Go and do it.
