Also, I got a decent raise from what I was making before, but we have a new associate who is making more than me as a base salary. He has been an attorney longer than I have but our skills are on par with each other.
Is it common for associates to be making more than even non-equity partners?
Non equity Partner is just a title. You're still an employee, not a legal 'partner' (owner) of the firm.
My view- there is no legal title for non-equity partner. It assumes a contract based arrangement. Without a written contract, it’s widely open to interpretation, interpretation which would possibly be in your favor. I always err on the side of committing agreements to writing to make sure everyone is on the same page, but I find it wild that the firm isn’t pushing a written contract on you for this to protect themselves and the partnership.
And by “no legal title” I was not contradicting A1. I meant it independent of A1’s comment. What I mean is that, on its own, it’s not a legally recognized relationship such as partner, employee, contractor, etc.
