So I am going to new tech place with 185k and 8% 401k matching. Injave 12 yoe but lack adjacent skillset like cloud, cicd stuff that pretty much every software role wants. microsoft and Amazon are still companies i want to get into in Virginia. Should I brush up technical interview methodology while at new place and then apply constantly or try to learn from new job and see where it goes? It is federal job so the salary will cap off soon and commercial has higher ceiling.. thanks.

Don’t just brush up for the interview, actually try to learn the material as close to hands on as you can. Get the tech piece down and passing the tech interview will follow.

Don’t apply constantly, give yourself a few months to study/prep.

I don’t get what you are trying to say. You got hired for a non technical role and want to become more technical and get a role at Amazon or Microsoft?

funny

I am doing something very similar op. Jumping to a commercial role from GPS. Going to strong arm into some cloud related roles, and apply for tech in 2 years

Apply and find out what they’re looking for in your target role.

For aws the tpm role they need more tpm experience which my new job won't provide. I think MS they want the full scope for federal, otherwise I haven't heard back from commercial group.

185k is decent, what is your skill set

185k in total package or base ? What is base salary and location?

I have 5 YOE in Analytics... always thought I wanted to be a DS, but every job (even the junior ones) required experience in ML development. Though I am part of the ML project, I'm not the person develop the model. And I have a hard time when the interviewer ask about how I develop the model and what hyperparameters I tuned. I know the thought process and stuff but 'I' wasn't the one who did that part in the project. How to convince them that I could do the job without taking credit of others.

So, I’m interviewing for a position that fits perfectly, HR likes my profile, had great conversations with them. Today I had a Panel interview with HR and the hiring manager. The manager is not experienced, it’s her first r manager role and she’s been in it for 3 months. I was prepared but was out of breath the entire interview, had a knot in my throat, had trouble finding my words. It’s like I had PTSD when this manager came into the picture. Ever had that?
