So you didn’t know consultants and attorneys, for example, didn’t need to be CPAs? Who lied to you and said they did?
That’s the dumb half
I know plenty of dumb people who have their CPA. Book smart more often doesn’t translate to actual work
The best accountants I know are engineers 😂
They are very deliberate in talking staff, and then trying to make a linkage to all things that accounting firms do. It should not be surprising that the vast majority of our consulting staff are not CPAs (no need, it is not what they do). At my firm, you are not making manager in audit unless you're a CPA and that's not going to change.
Sure, you could have, but it depends on what your career goals are. You get paid more as a CPA and you can’t get promoted to manager or above in public accounting without it.
Slop
Overall becoming a CPA is still worth it, but you can be successful without it for sure.
It’s not that hard, just spend a few months and get it
If you want to stay in accounting in industry or even adjacent like FP&A, CPA is worth it above Manager title. From what I’ve seen, companies will turn down strong candidates (Sr Manager +) because they don’t have their CPA
