It had good deals years ago. Now they use that history combined with sleazy pricing tactics to get a sales boost. I have quite a few price alerts set up on camelcamelcamel. For the past two years, I have watched Amazon raise prices before prime day just to drop them close to the regular price as a "big sale!".

I've noticed some of these pricing tactics too. I have stuff tracked in camel camel camel.
I think it's a bit of both, although I'd lean toward a giant PR push. Most of the deals are underwhelming. It's just a slick way for Amazon to create a shopping occasion during the slower months of the year.

I'm glad there's an alternative to black friday now mid year. Granted black friday isn't what it used to be either.

My hot take is I love that Prime Day incentivises other brands to have summer sales and I like taking advantage of them more than Prime Day.

Same! I love seeing Walmart and Target now try to compete with their own days
Amazon is a parasitic leviathan that manufactures the illusion of value to convince the public to keep spending their hard-earned money—fueling its unchecked, relentless expansion and domination, with no regard for the societal impact it leaves in its wake. The result: deepening wage and wealth disparity, the erosion of our economy, and a business model that rewards exploitation, suppresses labor rights, and reinforces the worst aspects of short-term thinking and consumerism.
But don’t ask me what I really think lol

I'm guessing you're not a fan of Jeff Bezos
I think it's a little bit of both. I'm spending probably $80 on stuff I needed anyway. I know others are spending thousands on big ticket items. But I also know a lot of people who think it's just a gimmick and don't spend anything.
I like to add to my cart everything I need and have been wanting before Prime Day, then I compare prices during Prime Day and see if it makes sense to buy it. I usually make great deals, so I love buying during Prime Day.
Coach
Smart to add to your cart before! I've gotten some great deals in the past but didn't buy anything this year.
Total PR tactic. Add an item to your cart beforehand and watch the price skyrocket only to "go on sale" during Prime Day.
