So the other day I was pulling some students from kindergarten for speech. They were watching Bluey. Okay, I thought... no big deal. When I brought the kids back, Bluey was still going. When I came to get more students an hour later... they were still watching!! The kindergarten teacher is retiring this year- I think she is a little burned out!

Before we judge, what else is going on? Did they earn a class reward? Was this the way they were choosing to celebrate Global School Play Day? Is the teacher not feeling well but showed up anyway due to lack of subs? Was she given paperwork or assessments to do and needed the class to be quietly occupied so she could get things done during paid contractual hours? Does this happen all the time or was it an unusual event? We as teachers are under so much pressure and so much scrutiny- can we be supportive or kind before we judge harshly?

like

You are totally right. I definitely don't want to judge but it's happened a few times now. I did learn later that it was more of a reward that day... but usually it's just 1 or 2 episodes after lunch which doesn't seem as much as I thought initially.

Looking for advice! I was approved to work remotely but my salary will decrease 10%. I received two raises so the decrease brings me down to my previous salary. I was told that it’s due to the cost of labor in the area.

I’ve been with my company for 8+ yrs, I love my manager and the work I do (engagement, recognition, & wellness programs) but I feel like I’m limiting myself since I have the experience, an HRM degree, and SHRM-CP credentials.

Should I apply for roles outside the company?

Is this legal? My spouses company just decided to change their comp structure for account managers. It was base + comm, now it’s commission only but nothing changed, OT commission is the same, didn’t get more points, just took away the base pay and said work harder basically. So now they have to worker harder to get $50k they were already making. (Not a decision based on employee performance, they’ve been crushing it. I think the company is just trying to save money they overspent else where)

I love my job in special education, the job may bring quite a bit of stress and exhaustion but nothing compares to the stress of the related service team. OT, PT, speech, BCBA, social worker, etc etc is really what’s killing me this year. It is 23 days into the school year and the team members all make different plans and as a result, nothing is being accomplished. And if paraprofessionals follow ie what OT says but not PT, it cause so much unnecessary conflict!

High school special class (self-contained) teachers: What do you use for planning? I’ve always been an inclusive teacher, so I followed the plan book of my co-teacher. I can’t even decide if I should go digital or paper-based let alone make a final decision! I’ll be teaching 9-11th grade math and 11th grade science. The 11th grade classes I can very much do whatever I (or the student) want/need…there isn’t a set curriculum
