Some of my students are wanting to learn cursive writing. They have chosen to learn cursive as their 20% Time project. I found a website that has downloadable worksheets. I have watched one of my "bounce-around-the-room" kiddos sit the entire class period and just write in cursive during her 20% Time. Kids tell me that they wish the would bring back the requirement to learn cursive. Do any schools require cursive writing anymore? Why did schools stop requiring it in the first place?

I've heard various reasons why cursive was dropped over time. One that kind of makes sense is that it's time consuming to teach it. And I guess the idea was to teach digital skills instead. I think it's a bad idea to just let it fade away. I'm not aware of any schools that require it, but I assume there could be some out there. I don't know that anyone has written a well-reported book on the disappearance of cursive writing, but I'd actually be interested in reading something like that.

California has added cursive writing back into the elementary school curriculum and I think it’s terrific. The issue, however, is that we have a large group of kids currently in upper grades (4-12) who never learned it - very sad!

There are so many benefits of learning cursive and I believe it was extremely short-sighted to eliminate it from the standards before. Because cursive is a flowing script, it crosses the brain hemispheres and unites the logical side of the brain with the artistic side. Doing this actually has some notable memory benefits, just like using color does (hence, the reason I teach students to use highlighters to color code their notes).

Lastly, students who cannot read cursive cannot access historical documents in their original form. Having done a lot of my own genealogical research, I’ve found that most documents prior to the 1930s were hand-written in cursive. Things like census forms, marriage licenses and birth certificates would be inaccessible to someone who can’t read cursive.

We still have cursive so hearing that it was stopped in a lot of places was kind of weird. I can totally understand that between that and something else, maybe reading, one can be more important than the other. I’ve actually seen it be a great thing for just coordination and good reason to put pencil to paper in a near everything digital world.

I agree. I think that is one reason my kids are living it. I am really thinking about giving my students the option to turn in assignments on paper if they want to practice their cursive writing skills.

Montessori teaches cursive. Also, there is science behind cursive being great for students with ADHD because the flow of the words gives more consistency. Same as ADHD kids with pens, as pencils wear down they feel different in our hands and pens are consistent.

I totally agree with this. My student who is usually all over the place, is actually finishing her work so she can have time to cursive write before class ends

We teach cursive in 2nd grade

My students are really talking about and wanting to learn. My fast finishers are going through practice sheets like crazy!😀

We teach cursive in 2nd grade.

So many of my students say they wish they had learned how to write in cursive. That is one reason I let them practice if they want to learn it in my room. Plus it gives my fast finishers something to work on.

Hello Fishes,

I need some advice regarding this situation and what to do. So I work for a company that offers outsourcing services to major investment banks around the world. I have been working for a new client for about six months now and they seem to like my work so far. Recently I saw that they're hiring to get people on their team at my level. My question is, should I talk to my client and try to pursue them to consider me for the role they're hiring for?

Hi,
Can there be a case when you are hired for a specific role and later on you are aligned to a different project ?
Thanks

Does anyone know the answer to this? - My first mortgage statement was generated on 11/2 with a due date of 12/1 and includes a month of interest based on the balance on 11/2. I made a principle only payment on 11/14 of $500 which was applied right away. Will the interest automatically recalc to reflect a lower outstanding balance for a portion of the month? I plan to do this every month.
