Some people say never share your salary expectations.
Others say go in high and let them “meet you in the middle.”
Then - there’s the classic: “Say yes now and negotiate later.”

Are these helpful or harmful? What’s your take? What’s the worst salary advice you’ve heard👇

None of these are right.

Never share your salary expectations - what are they supposed to do? Guess? Waste both side of the time?

Go in high and meet in the middle - that’s so wrong. Along the line of guesswork.

Say yes now and negotiate later - and waste interview times just to get disappointed?

All of these tactics are for those who don’t have confidence and hoping just to land a job. If you know your own worth, do the reverse.

In my first call with the recruiter, if they don’t ask me, I always ask what’s the pay structure and pay range is. If they ask my expectations first, I always ask back what’s their range. Then I’ll tell them where I’m comfortable with. If necessary, I even share where I’m currently at and tell them unless I’m getting X or Y, I’m not considering. Sometimes, we just agree we can’t work it out and safe ourselves some time from interview. When we can agree on it, the offer that comes after all round better be what I initially said I’m comfortable or I just say no. They’ll always come back if they want to hire me or if they don’t, we move on. Makes everything easy.

Same. I put a lot of energy and effort in prepping for an interview. I’d rather know upfront if it is worth my while.
I will ask them the pay range and if they are being dicey, I let them know my minimum requirement is XXXX to even consider going further along in the process.

"Never share your salary expectations" has to be up there, though I don't think anyone has ever told me that. It effectively shuts down all room for negotiating. "Say yes now and negotiate later" is almost as bad. Sounds like a fantastic way to give whoever made you an offer reason to consider pulling it. Going in above what you want isn't necessarily bad advice, it's just too vague to really be useful.

Worst salary advice from my mother: just accept what you’re given. (She’s an immigrant without corporate experience)

I've been asked what my salary expectation were and I responded as per the above asking where the salary range sat for the role. The response was that they NEVER share the salary or pay range. And this was just at the pre interview phase!

Well HCA I went in high expecting it will be set or negotiate but they rejected it. So with them lowball but in interview make sure they know you don’t wannabe the only one not having lunch bc you got the job but didn’t negotiate a salary properly

My recommendation is to share your salary expectations, but if the recruiter says that the company can't pay more than a certain number, honor that by not asking for a higher salary than that number. The worst salary advice is the third sentence you included: "Say yes now and negotiate later." It is important to negotiate before you're officially hired because you could earn many thousands more over the years. I hope this helps! You've got this!

I recently was let go (in lieu of accepting my two weeks) and I should have received my March expense check by the end of April per the employment agreement (submitted the report April 1, let go before mid April). Should I Go Back and Reneg? Recently I was offered a role as a Project Implementation Manager (In Retirement Services) .The salary range for Colorado residents was 65-89K. I’m located in NY so the recruiter said he would try to get me more. Ultimately he came back at 90K which is a bit inline with that I was seeing on Glassdoor but approx looks like I may leave 10-12K on the table. I accepted already but may get an offer from another HR company in account management around 90-100K. Need advice

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

Interviewing at a dream company, and right from the first interview the recruiter told me we are way off on salary expectations. This was a little bit expected, as the role is requiring a few years less experience than I have and also in a much cheaper market. They already told me the salary range during this first call, but wondering if they like me enough and I get an offer, how I might approach negotiating for more. I would be making much less than I do now, but it is a dream company.

I'm working in the US under H1B, I got a chance to face an interview for another company. My current company started the PERM application also and results will be out within the next 3 months. Is it okay to transfer my H1B to a new company? Can my H1B transfer be denied? For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.
