Does anyone here work for Silicon Valley Bank? They recently acquired Boston Private. I’m a candidate for a job at Boston Private. Wondering if SVB is planning layoffs in the near term at BP? Also, does anyone know the anticipated benefits to be rolled out from SVB as the parent company? Specifically interested in health insurance providers. Thanks in advance for any information! Ive spent my whole career in the so-called big leagues. Agencies you specifically mentioned and others in that tier.
…you’re not missing anything. The sheen wears off and the things each says makes them unique are the same things all the others say.
This. Thank you— the so-called big leagues are just hype and a lot of posing
I spent the beginning of my career at big shops, the middle at hot shops, and the current era at smaller indies, and I have to say; this job is 10x better at a smaller shop with less of an institutional ego and/or less process baggage. Also it’s rare in my experience that strategy at a hot agency is actually given a voice; you’re there to write new upfront slides with 45 min notice.
100% SD1 - I would not be as good at my job if I didn’t have all three experiences. But I will say working at a holding company creative agency in 2025 seems a lot like being in steerage class on the titanic, from my vantage point.
I worked in the same network as 72 (stagwell) and so I have a shred of knowledge on this—a handful of people came and went from my team to theirs.
From my POV, it’s: Know someone, freelance and prove your worth, or get them when they really need you. Maybe I’m wrong.
FWIW, practically all the hires at my agency were referrals. It’s what it is.
I felt exactly the same way at around 10 years. Ended up working at a few of the places you named. Realized it was all perception. Yes maybe they have more stability right now than the big holdco’s but it’s all the same stuff with the same problems and the same frustrations. 14 years in and am dead set on doing something else now.

Just got in one. Asked the recruiter. Timing is everything.

I think the only difference among agencies is the talent level around you is better in some places as a whole. Which doesnt really mean it's a better place to work (WLB or even some magic level of satisfaction) - you just have a faster pressure cooker to learn things. If you feel like you've already learned a lot and on top of your game, FOMO is really not valuable in this case. They are all the same with the same issues.
