They can’t describe their DEI initiatives beyond lame ass parties and catered lunches during pride month, black history month, etc
A place posturing like they care to make a healthy, progressive work place? Yeah, that’s a red flag.
The places that treat DEI like a party planning committee are the same places that invite their minority employees to the client meetings, but not the brainstorms. They believe diversity is the same thing as inclusion. They’re the same places that pay men more. They’re the places that offer a week of paternal leave and treat you like a piece of shit for taking a day off to watch your kids. They’re the places that don’t have an issue working with brands like Chik-Fil-A. The list goes on and on.
You can ask about all of those things, and of course they’ll give you answers that don’t sound bad. Or you can ask about their efforts and read between the lines when they tell you they do killer margaritas for Hispanic heritage month. It’s a small thing that’s indicative of a larger thing.
Interview after interview after interview. No structure to the interviews either, just rambling and asking random questions that other candidates probably weren’t even asked
Comments like “looking for the perfect candidate” “we’re looking for a rockstar” — that just means they’re gonna nitpick every little thing and have insane, unrealistic expectations
"We're like a family."
Means they want you to have the same dedication to the company as your fam. Will translate to the expectation of additional work with no additional rewards or incentives, repeated boundary crossing, getting called out for "not participating" in office culture, and toxic grind mentality.
Also when they tip toe around questions or provide justifications for questions that are longer than the answer.
Oh and also someone who asks those “tell me about a time when” questions and you can tell they’re really critiquing your answers…like do you really think these questions are helping you to determine if I’m a quality candidate or not?

How longing has everyone worked there - if most are a year or less, that’s a red flag.
two years too
Sometimes I’ll just be straight up and say “do you like working here” and you can tell from stumbling response lol
How do you deal with difficult people? I was asked that at 2 different jobs. Both were toxic work environments. They don’t do anything about these people. It’s like they’re ok with them driving people away.
"Hom you'll want to become in 5 years?"
"You won't handle everything as we have much work and not enough personal"
