Starting the long journey to law school. In the interest of time and money (I am mid thirties now) I have been looking into obtaining a law degree from the UK and taking the NCA exams upon return. Has anyone gone this route previously? Would it be a better transition to be called to the bar in the UK prior to returning to Canada? Thoughts and advice appreciated.

I haven’t but my gf did and she said the exams are a b*tch. Ended up just staying and practicing in Europe so might be more trouble than it’s worth to learn there and transfer back imo

Have you already been admitted to any law schools here? Would say that doing a law degree in the UK and coming back is definitely not in the interest of time if you can get into school here. Also big firms (not sure where your ambition lies) are also more likely to give students from Canadian schools articling roles if you’re in a province that require articles to license. It’s a huge disadvantage.

I ended up practicing at a big firm with a degree from the UK, but that being said, would not recommend this route to others given how hard the experience was for myself.

If you use the pomodoro method for time focus and tracking, do you bill in those increments or just keep your billablr timer going the whole time? For example, I work in 25 minute increments for large projects then I get a break. Do I bill .5 for that increment and restart my billing or keep my billing continuously going thereby not rounding up for those 5 min? I have just kept my timer going.

Does anyone know about associate compensation at the regional Atlantic Canada firms? The the big ones have all been posting job ads for associates in the 3-5 year range. Any insight on salary and billable targets?

Wondering if anyone could share some comps for salary for 2nd year associates? Most helpful info would be SK/AB based but I will take anything at this point. Hoping to negotiate a raise this year but working at a small firm I have no comps to go off of. Also interested in any tips for salary negotiations!

I’m a senior lawyer in the financial regulatory space in the US. Dual US and Canadian citizenship, though my whole career has been in the US. Admitted to NY bar. Interested in working in Toronto.

Currently on maternity leave from a small firm with no may leave benefits. Would love to become legal aid duty counsel to get better with life balance and mat leave benefits for kid #2. But I hear it's next to impossible to get a full time position except by starting on contract. Anyone in Toronto have any insight about becoming a family law duty counsel?

Too quiet in this bowl. Just like everything else in Canada! Come on, lawyers!

Received an offer from the DOJ for a 2 year contract, doing work which seems more interesting/engaging than what I’m doing right now (insurance defence) - but for just over 9% less than I’m currently making, and the partner track has been outlined for me at my firm..feel like it’s not worth trading higher long term earning potential for contract + pay cut just because the work is more engaging..but on the other hand, ID is starting to bore me..thoughts/refs to anyone at DOJ would be appreciated
