Struggling to pivot practice sectors. Info: I’m 2+ years in to PI/insurance defense and want to move to employment. I don’t mind litigation (ig). Even more difficult, I’ve been trying to move in-house or at least transactional. The robots keep filtering me out even though I custom-tailor their jobs buzzwords in my resume. Please help or have any advice on how to make ANY of these pivots?

This. There is no substitute for a personal connection or being in the right place at the right time. I have seen it happen with exactly the switch you are trying to make. Here are a few ideas on how to make it happen.

Go meet people who practice in the area that you are interested in. There are Bar Association events near you where you can do this. At this very moment DRI is having a conference in New Orleans. There are a ton of lawyers from a ton of different firms and practice areas attending. (no idea if this is anywhere near where you are geographically, but the point is that the opportunities are out there.)

Identify leading practitioners in the area of practice that you’re interested in, and go to events where they are presenting. Regardless of whether you meet the presenter, chances are you will meet other folks in that practice area.

Join an Inn of Court, or similar mixed bar organization. You will not only increase your chances of meeting practitioners in the area you want to switch to, but you will also meet the people who know the people that can get you hired.

After 6 years of temporary contracts and unstable situations, I find my dream job in my dream company. All of a sudden the world goes upside down and I get laid off. I start sending hundreds of applications, with only 2 recruiters getting back to me to say I don’t have experience for the job (this is how it works in Italy). Add a terrible health situation in my family and it seems there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. Ugh. 😞

I'm in a litigation, about 9 months in. Is it normal that I spend majority of my time making bundles for my partners (printing, binding, moving docs in a different order whenever there are new documents or he wants to add stuff) reviewing documents and making tables (e.g. dates, which documents are from where), and the only legal work is like notices of admission, list of documents, the occasional research? I'm so bored and I want to quit but I don't know if I have unrealistic expectations.

Any tips for building a client base from scratch? I’m a 4th year associate at a firm of 12 attorneys. I practice in business, compliance, and real estate (primarily on partners’ files) and don’t litigate. Most of the partners’ clients are wealthy friends or friends of friends (not my circle). Associates are not referred business, even cold calls, and so far “networking” events like Chamber of Commerce luncheons have been a bust.
