I’d make sure to follow the disciplinary procedures at your school and contact the parent about it. I had to write up a kid for disrupting class and calling me racist because I moved his seat a couple of weeks ago. He served ISS and then we chatted afterwards. I hope it’ll solve the problem until the end of the semester. Fingers crossed.
Thanks so much!
Do not take mean things children say personally. Follow through with consequences for the behavior itself, but tbh I probably would have laughed at her. Children are always surprised when you don’t give them the reaction they wanted.
I would make sure that student understands the ramifications of accusing someone of slavery. Slavery is not an issue to be joked about or tossed around flippantly it is a real thing that happened to people and it should be taken seriously.
Thanks for the reply. We’re talking about it in social studies and we even read the story Iqbal, and I’m trying to get through to him.
I would wait until I was more calm (I have a super sharp tongue) and talk to the student later. It's pretty rare that when I approach a student with an attitude of "I'm sorry that I have hurt your feelings/mistreated you, it was not on purpose and I would like to fix it" that they weren't receptive, and usually they will apologize and tell me what was really going on. The flicking off is probably a phone call or referral though.
I would not move towards disciplinary action. It was a word -don’t give that student that much power. Our country is racially charged right now. Talk to the student, use humor, remind him that slaves were not allowed to be formally educated.
