Swearing shows a lack of vocabulary and easily set off emotions. Stay calm and in control.
Lack of vocab? That’s bullshit! It’s not what you say but when and how. It shows passion, when used in proper context.
Fuck me! What happened to you lot!? This is advertising. It’s meant to be FUN. If you’re gonna not hire someone because they use a swear word then y’all are probably in the wrong industry.
No, but people who take swearing super seriously are not fun. Fact.
My first ever interview (got the job) the agency owner dropped the f-bomb so much I lost count. I found my first home 🖤
Automatic yes, I’m a monster raised by wolves and if they remind me of dear old grandma, they’re in.
But seriously, nothing ever is an automatic “no”. Zero tolerance policies are why 8 years get escorted out of school in handcuffs. Extreme example I know but that’s the point.
Context is key, in every situation. If I’m interviewing the best candidate in the world and they accidentally dropped “shit” in an impassioned moment, I’m not kicking them out the room. It happens. Probably enjoy working with them more, just dont do it in front of a client, UNLESS your client lets it fly in casual conversation anyway then have at it. Built a career on being a chameleon with clients and being what they need me to be so I can build comfort. If they are foul mouthed the whole way through, maybe, yea, less of a “slip” or an exclamation deemed worthy.
Point is- some of the most talented (and business driven) people I know swear like sailors.
I def dropped an F bomb in my interview where I currently work and... they still hired me! 😃 I did apologize immediately after and the CD shrugged and said, “Psh this is advertising!”
It certainly depends on the role. For a finance position (like I’m in) if someone can’t go 30 minutes in an interview without cursing that’s would be a huge red flag. Same if you were hiring an HR position.
FYI I also worked at Chiat with some legendary cursers in the operations: 1) it was an absolute blast to hang out with them 2) I feel like they didn’t hold me in any less regard that I didn’t partake eg you want your finance guys not to think they’re creatives & vice versa
It depends on which word. But I think it’s ok, while not ideal. If that’s who you are going don’t want to work for a company that doesn’t let you be you
I think it is about knowing your audience. Sometimes swearing says you aren’t afraid to be bold, and be real. If you want to be safe, sure, avoid it.
My definition of swearing has changed drastically as an adult. Definitely not a no because of that.
How old are we?
I would personally avoid it in an interview but not hold it against someone else.
Yooo I'm never swearing in an interview. And if my interviewers are, a lot, I could probably pick up on the fact that they're trying to get me to do it... At that point it'd be a bit obvious. So I might throw in a hell. Other than that, just wait till I'm hired, I'll show y'all my inner sailor 😂
Yooo. I’ll admit to being one of Junior Copywriter’s interviewers. I often spend my time with a prospective hire trying to trick them into utilizing foul language. I don’t do this for any discernible reason. I’m just bat-shit crazy.
Definitely depends on the place. But as someone who’s had to code switch most of my life, I still haven't quite adapted to cursing at work, in front of clients, etc.
CD 6 🙃 Yes, yes I am.
Not automatic yes or no. There is nothing wrong with candid and colorful honesty provided it comes from a place of honesty. If it’s honest and natural great, but if it’s out of arrogance, a need for drama etc, then hard pass. But not sure cursing is a critical measure of talent and fit .
Swears are just language. Using language well is a plus. Not using language well is a minus. Just try to be good at language and reading the room. And when in doubt, don't.
