As someone who has been interviewing for the past few months, you’re right. They don’t want to give you more than a day or two to make a decision. And like you said, if a better offer comes along, I’ll pull out to take the better offer.

Honestly, yes. A little space usually leads to more confident yes decisions and far fewer drop offs later. Short term speed can cost more than a thoughtful, committed hire.

This is a real tension. Companies push for fast decisions to manage hiring risk; candidates push for time to manage career risk. Both sides are acting rationally, but the mismatch creates friction.
In my experience, transparency helps more than speed. Communicating timelines early (“I’m expecting another final round next week”) tends to produce better outcomes than silently rushing or delaying.
Exploding offers often backfire. A slightly longer decision window usually leads to more confident acceptances and fewer reneges — which benefits everyone long term.
