Well you’d have to make the jump at some point! I’d start taking opportunity to lead in your correct role. See if there’s ways you can support your current manager, ask for opportunities to showcase your leadership skills or way you can spearhead projects or improvement initiatives within your department. These would all be really good things to be able to have on a resume. I also have a Lean Six Sigma cert so that also is a nice additive that I think showed my drive before I had the actual management experience.
Management itself isn’t what’s hard, that’s just checking off boxes of tasks. Leadership is what makes a team, so I focus primarily on that and do what I need to on the management side. I’ve taught my team to manage themselves for the most part so that I can lead.
All that to say, ask for direct manager for some guidance and extra responsibility. Find a mentor in your field if you can! Find someone in a role you’d like to be in, ideally in your field, reach out and see if they’d be open to chat or go for a coffee so you can pick their brain about how they got to where they are! And never ever ever ever give up. If you relentlessly apply and add to your resume of skills and experience little by little you will get where you want to go.
Used this strategy to get leadership role at former job. Great advice.
Network, ensure you have mentors and sponsors who can help sell your candidacy for the role. They have to be comfortable vouching for you that you’re ready.
Even then, company policies often prevent skip level jumping. So just be aware of those procedures.
For sure - networking!
I would also add: make sure to be very clear on why you are the right person for such a role?
What are all accomplishments you achieved so far? Results you created in the Team/company? What’s the value you could bring to such a role?...
More you´re clear on the answers to these questions, easier it will be to communicate that with others too :)
Wish you all the best!
Start with the job description & align your current skills with the role. As well as what the future goals are. Since you’re already at the company you already have an advantage. Are you the only one being considered from your company? If not set yourself apart via your current boss’s recommendation etc. Good luck 🍀
Boss recommendation would be good. Good idea!
Read leadership books and/or podcasts. Really think about the type of manager you want to be.
Work on the positions:
Productivity
Best practices
Time management
Team Building
and Accountability aspects, how can you expound upon each individually and as an whole?
Stellar interview. I do internal interviews all the time and the biggest deterrent is the internal not prepping for the interview like an external candidate would.
