They're trying to shorten our tiimeline by two months because “leadership wants momentum,” even though the experiments literally take a fixed amount of time. Biology does not negotiate. How do you communicate that without sounding combative?

Put the schedule on a slide and ask them where to cut time. If it's impossible to cut down time on certain lines, tell them why it's impossible. Provide alternatives that might get the deadline, even if infeasible. At least you can look like you're not trying to be a wet blanket. Can you run more experiments in parallel with double the budget? Maybe it would only cost 20% more? Explain how that affects your risk posture.
Mostly you want to make it clear that you want to find a way to make it work, but need their help to understand where to reclaim that time.

I would set up a gantt chart and ask for their help in timing it

Usually when you present the timeline in this format people understand and then you may have to send it up to leadership

You have to love when you’re funded or employed by people who don’t understand basic math or science. This is what the research industry has become. Everybody wants to see a quick turnaround.

If your experiments follow a protocol I would sit down with leadership and go through the specific timelines for each part of the experiment with leadership. In my experience, administrators often aren’t familiar with the details of the research process; they’re usually focused on funding or administrative responsibilities.

Unfortunately, science generally works on a different timeline to business interests. The trick is to be honest upfront about setting realistic deadlines given your resources, with solid explanations of the experiments (without going into numbing detail for the non-scientists) to back up your estimates.

Now my rental got hit by something with a large star damage to the windshield and will have to be replaced since it larger than a coin . Scared if I tell insurance my rate will go up even more. Would it be hard to get a exp associate role in advisory at a B4 as someone with about 10 months in audit at EY, 7 months experience in corporate accounting at a F300 and CPA? Hated my time at the F300 but had thought the grass would be greener in industry. I’m starting a financial analyst position at a major hospital system in my area soon and want to stick with that for a couple years before making a transition but was curious if I just don’t have the right experience for a role in advisory.

What is one of the most frustrating parts of being a scientist or researcher?

I'll tell you what it is: referencing!

You have to do so much of it, and it's so annoying. You have to cite your sources, but there are so many different formats for citations! And then sometimes you don't even know how to cite something, and how are you supposed to know that unless you ask someone who knows? And even then, they might not be sure whether it should be an in-text citation or a footnote…
