It is an unhealthy stupid fad - learn how to eat properly - read “The Zone” by Dr Barry Sears
Hey. If you're serious about improving health and losing weight, I would recommend looking into intermittent fasting. Not just 16:8, but proper periods of extended fasting. Benefits of detox, autophagy etc coupled with weight loss.
Read up on the path of Atkins founder. Scared me away from Keto. Effective so long as you can reduce your carbs and your body doesn’t shut down
It’s binary. You have to either be all in or not. You can’t eat pizza on Monday and go into Ketosis on Tuesday. Managing a true ketogenic diet is quite difficult as well. Some people think paleo=ketogenic but some vegetables like carrots have a lot of carbs that would send you out of ketosis. Long story short, I asked my neurologist about doing ketogenic bc I have epilepsy and it’s proven to be good for kids with epilepsy and she said she doesn’t advise it bc it’s so hard to truly manage the diet.
Agree with SA1 Keto for 4 months while traveling earlier this year. It was pretty difficult to stay on top of, and you’re either in or out of ketosis. I didn’t lose much weight at all, and have been better off / happier eating healthy 3 meals a day and exercising regularly
BTW just to be clear, keto is not some magic voodoo where you can eat 10 pounds of bacon a day and it magically erases body fat. It's still Calories In, Calories Out. You just don't feel the need to eat as many calories, or as frequently, as you do with a carb-based diet.
Whole 30’ is just as restrictive as Keto but the difference is Keto is all about the makeup of the food you eat (low carb, high fat, high protein) and whole 30 is all about the kind of food you eat (no sugar, dairy or grains of any kind). Ok whole 30 you’re practically eating meat and vegetables and fruit is sometimes ok. It ends up being somewhat Keto in the sense the rant eliminating all grains (rice beans bread quinoa etc) you’re reducing carbs. These diets are both extreme and I’d only recommend them for someone with extreme circumstances like if you were morbidly obese, or fighting some autoimmune disease. If you’re looking to lose 10 lbs id set other goals like no carbs for dinner, no processed foods, one alcoholic drink a week. Like others above mentioned, eating should be a lifestyle. If you do keto or whole 30 you’ll lose weight but you’ll gain it back once you stop and neither of those diets are sustainable unless you’re a child with epilepsy or facing some autoimmune disorder and trying to reduce inflammation
I'm a big fan of keto. Had weight problems all my life, could never put down the beer and pizza... Until now. Lost 15 pounds since mid August and haven't been hungry or craved bread/sugar at all. Energy levels have been higher and waaaay more stable.
The name "keto" is not great, ketosis is not the point. The point is for your body to become fat-adapted so it runs off fat not carbs. You hit your daily macro goal for protein, don't eat more than 20g net carbs, and eat fats to feel full.
Depending on how much weight you have to lose etc, most people find they eat to satiety while consuming 500-1000 less calories than their TDEE. The rest comes from your stored body fat without you noticing.
Does traditional dieting work? Yes, if you have the willpower to be hungry a lot. Does keto work? Yes, and you will eat delicious foods and not be hungry. Clear choice for me.

Thanks for the input everyone! I just started looking into this so all of this is really helpful. What about Whole30? Seems less strict and maybe easier to follow? I’m only trying to lose 10 lbs (currently at 125, I’m petite but starting to flesh out in, er...unflattering ways).
Also, I know “well balanced diet and exercise” will also work but my personality is that I need clear rules or I’ll rationalize my way into pizza and beer so fast.
Eat simple carbs, no sugar, healthy fats (fish, avocado, nuts). Replace beer with vodka soda, etc. Drink at least 2 liters of water a day. If you live by these these guidelines, you’ll be golden.
You’ll lose weight on Whole30 and then gain it back after the 30 days. Diet is a lifestyle, not a weight loss shortcut.
The idea behind Whole 30 is that you gradually add things back (Dairy, gluten, eggs) and you can determine if one them makes you feel like shit
