That sounds very noncommittal. Maybe a role in maybe a year or two. I would want to ask for something a little bit more concrete with a more specific timeframe.

Whenever I'm asked to do stretches, it feels like a trap. Usually people who ask for stretches are looking for something for themselves, they can't guarantee that you'll get something as they are already trying hard for themselves...
It’s a positive signal, but until it’s official, I’d treat it as an intention rather than a guarantee. Use the discussion to clarify expectations and start preparing for the role.
My boss used to ask me what my growth goal was every year, manage people, get promoted to senior level? …then would map out a plan to get there. After several years and a good relationship, he finally admitted he has no power to promote. No one on team has ever been promoted above my level. And while he will continue to suggest, I would be better off getting another job in the company. He eventually left the company.
That sounds generally positive, but it's hard to know how seriously to take something like that. In fairness, a lot of positive moves begin with a conversation like that, but until things seem more concrete it's probably best not to count on it.
