Traveling for work is not the same as traveling for pleasure. The inside of an office looks the same no matter where it is in the world.
Travel for work is one of those things that seems really glamorous on the outside but is actually pretty shitty 90% of the time
No it’s not enjoyable. You tend to work long hours “to make the most of it”, usually to lame suburban locations, and you eat out every meal which makes you fat.
Rising Star
You don’t have to have a lot of money to travel. You can be savvy and save thousands. Also consider travel during low peak seasons.
Example:
- You can get to a Europe for 300-400 during Jan-May (play around with the dates), Oct/Nov.
-You can take trains and low cost flights between European countries, sometimes as low as $20-39.
-You can go to Asia, food is so affordable
-You can stay in hostels. Very popular for young people and solo travelers.
I find that traveling overseas is often cheaper than traveling within the US. But there are great deals sometimes on flights in US. Just avoid school vacation weeks and peak travel around holidays.
Most of the travel isn’t sexy, however you do rack up points and status which can significantly change how you travel. Be smart, fly the same airlines and stay at same hotel chains. Points and status quickly follow. Another thing is take advantage of where you travel and use that as a jumping off point - if you’re stuck in Seattle for an engagement head up north for a weekend or if you’re in the Midwest, take a day off and head to Bozeman for a few days. Theres a lot of opportunities if you do your research
It’s not bad - sometimes it’s a grind but I like going out and traveling for work, both domestically and internationally.
Usually my work trips end up being 1-2 nights with long flights and full schedules. Rarely do I get personal time to “do my own thing” so I wouldn’t bank on it feeling like traveling for fun. I would try to save some PTO if you get it and cut back on any extras to afford personal travel. Best of luck to you!
Living out of a suitcase and staying at the same Hyatt in middle America gets old real quick. After being on a plane that much, you’ll begin to detest flying (even for leisure).
