Thoughts on doing a PT MBA if intending to stay in the federal/military space? Curious of others who did so and the benefits of the degree for them.

I'm a Data Scientist at Booz Allen and considering doing a PT MBA in the DC area. I make ~$135k so near a post-MBA salary so I think it's better going PT rather than FT. If I'm intending to stay in the federal space though, does it make sense? I'm also considering going the officer route into the military. Also hold an M.S. Computer Science degree.

An MBA is an investment in yourself. Generally speaking, if you’re talking about proposal bidding, an MBA isn’t a differentiator for federal contracts. (Hence why there are so many check the box random masters programs around the DC area.) If you’re interested in, for example, a leadership role within government (eg political appointee, SES or similar) or within BAH (credential signaling on your CV), then an MBA makes sense.

Otherwise, a PT MBA will give you access to a broader, more diverse network, the university’s resources, and equip you with knowledge that you might not otherwise gain doing fed consulting. Only you know whether that’s valuable because you know yourself better than some random folks on FB.

The one thing I fully agree with is that an FT MBA is absolutely not worth it based on where you are. I was 31 when I started my EMBA at an M7 (would have done PT otherwise but scheduling was more feasible in my job) and I would have never done an FT MBA as an alternative.

Why do you need an MBA then if 1) it won't increase your salary and 2) you aren't moving careers

Don't do an MBA if 1 and 2 are applicable to you, which it seems like they are.

Part of the reason is I'm looking to learn more soft skills that will be harder for AI to automate. Mostly interested in material like leadership, negotiation, and general business fundamental courses. Feel like the degree would be a good credential to have if I stay at Booz to advance up the leadership ranks. Honestly also have the itch for more classroom learning since my MS program before I settle down.

I have very low expenses so I can save up and fully fund the program (with some employer tuition support) so am not planning on taking on debt to fund it which I feel is usually the biggest hurdle on deciding on an MBA. Though I get the point of saving my money for other purposes.

If you're a data scientist, a part time MBA would be valuable as it will give you a deeper knowledge of management sciences. It will differentiate you from other data scientists.

A PT MBA could definitely make sense if you’re planning to stay in the federal/military consulting space. Since you already earn close to a post-MBA salary and hold a technical M.S. in Computer Science, the main benefits of the MBA wouldn’t be financial uplift, but rather:

Leadership credibility, in both federal consulting and the military, an MBA signals management and strategic training, which helps when moving into program manager, director, or officer-level roles.

Networking in DC — a PT MBA in the DC area means building a network of peers who are also working in federal agencies, defense, and consulting. That’s arguably more valuable than going FT.

Flexibility, since you’re already positioned well as a Data Scientist, the MBA gives you optionality if you later want to pivot into leadership outside the federal space.

If your path is squarely federal/military, you might not “need” the MBA in the same way someone targeting MBB or banking does. But if leadership progression and cross-sector optionality are your goals, a PT program could be worth it.

But of course, it's all fake and payed 😂 turns out she wanted me to go there (even though I don't work for that TV network) so she's sure she'll be paid at the end of the show. Wth did I just do.

Here is my question
Would MBA be any good for me especially looking at strategy side?
I don’t want to spend $200K and would probably go online MBA in a mid tier school. Are those any good?
Looking forward to your great input on this topic

Becoming a manger in my current company/path will probably get me there in terms of TC. Also considering EMBA from a good school (Wharton Global, Duke, Kellogg, Booth).

Interviewing question: for anecdotal “tell me abt a time when..”, & similar questions - are you allowed to recycle stories from your undergrad years or do they only look for post grad/work stuff?
