Food in drink in the marina is mostly chain waterfront trash. But right next door to Venice Beach which has a lot of great options and there’s clusters of stuff along Washington and Venice Blvds heading East as well as the new stuff across Lincoln from you. Granted, that doesn’t matter right now with COVID restrictions.
If you like running or biking you won’t find a more convenient place in the LA basin. And if you have an upper floor facing west your sunsets will be spectacular.
Getting in and out is easy at all hours with the 90, but expect to spend an hour to get to/from DTLA during rush hour (I live at the other end of the 90 and used to work in the Marina. Commuted to the Marina from USC when I was an intern). The fastest route is Washington to National to Expo to Figueroa. Though you could make it less stressful if you hop on the metro in Culver City.
Rest of LA means getting on the 405 which is fine right now but sans-COVID is the worst traffic in the country.
Temperatures are typically 10-15 degrees cooler on the west side. Summer evenings are fantastic time to be outdoors. And nothing beats grilling while watching sunset over the water.
Is your work going to be in the office in dtla once covid ends? Biggest reccomendation I have for LA is to live close to where you work if you will be going in to the office. If that is the case, Silverlake, Echo Park, Los Feliz, and Highland Park are great options and give you a nice commute. If commute doesn't matter, then MDR is fine but I much prefer Venice. MDR is super close to all that Venice and Santa Monica have to offer but is so much cheaper, I'd say go for it
If you are going to travel more often than go to the office, then MDR is great for getting to/from LAX quickly
Living in the Jefferson now and definitely agree with some of the points above. Pros:
- location: easily hop on the 90
- travel to DTLA: the commuter express runs right behind the Jefferson which is a nice business commuting bus that has wifi. Extremely convenient
- dog friendly with the largest outdoor area for pets
- bike/running path is right behind the building
- can now walk to TraderJoes/Ralphs
- can walk to Scopa/Brennan’s/Lincoln/etc.
- fast maintenance team
Cons
- the building is average and the leasing office personnel are worthless
- some random fire alarms
- there is a decent homeless population near the back of the building
Happy to provide more perspective if you have specific q’s
Westerly requires renters insurance and I’ve never had it before. Who do y’all recommend / is cheapest? hah
Rising Star
Most apartments in LA require renters’ insurance, as they did in NoVa/DC too when I lived there. Not uncommon at all.
GEICO/Travelers and State Farm are pretty good options.
I’ve heard the fire alarms go off incessantly at the Jefferson, and cars are prone to getting broken into. I just signed at the Westerly on Lincoln yesterday. Moving from Venice so not a big move, but I love that area. Second only to Santa Monica, where the location is better but updated apartments are more expensive.
How was your time at the westerly? I’m considering it.
I lived at the Jefferson when I first moved to LA. My bedroom was $1250 in a 3BR. I miss the pool and unlimited visitor parking but sincerely hope 1) the fire alarms have chilled out 2) they do a better job managing incoming mail.
My car was never broken into, but this was 2013-2015.
Oh, also, you can walk to Abbot Kinney or get a beach cruiser and go down to The Whaler when this is all over. There’s a back exit that doesn’t need to touch Lincoln.
Have actually been looking at this apartment at well as well as it’s 2 sister properties. Westerly looks the nicest.
