Shut. It. Down. We need to stop this madness.
So Director--you don't go to stores or restaurants? Museums? Medical clinics? Concerts? How do you think their employees get to work?
It's super elitist to say that everyone works remotely. Most people don't.
Public works need to be funded properly in order to run well. The problem is that the CTA can't afford good security or more conductors. The best they can do is those lame K-9 rent-a-cops who spend all day on their phone.
Which sucks, because the CTA has some of the most complete infrastructure of any metro system in the US. We really should be giving them more. They aren't a business, they're a public service. If more people rode the CTA, there would be a lot less traffic and congestion on a day to day basis in the city.
The Mayor chose to keep Dorval Carter around entirely too long - the new leadership will be pivotal. Though unfortunately an article dropped this morning about the Mayor's office lying about, or at a bare minimum misrepresenting, the progress made on the national search. CTA has a long ways to go to prove they are capable of properly using the funding they DO have before taxpayers can be comfortable with more funding.
I don't disagree reform is necessary.
But all of the reforms taxpayers expect will inevitably require more funding.
The reason the CTA is often late is due to staff shortages. The reason it is more dangerous than we'd like is due to security shortages.
All of the proposed solutions to these problems cost money. Waiting until they're resolved to provide more funding will only perpetuate the problem.
We've chronically underfunded the CTA compared to other similarly sized transport systems in other states (like PA and MA) for decades. This is both a result of yes poor leadership but ALSO a lack of state funding.
Call your Illinois state reps for a special session this summer to find public transit.
