I don’t know what to say. I don’t have an alternative solution. But the language in the piece positions homelessness almost as a choice. For many people, it isn’t a choice. Taking apart an encampment doesn’t solve their problems and move them into a shelter or housing, it just means they’ll need to set up an encampment somewhere else. And I’m not saying leave the encampments or let them continue growing. But the whole situation is very sad and seems self-defeating.
I like that you know you don't know about quality of shelters. I wouldn't want to stay there, even as they have long wait lists and barriers to entry.
Joe Rogan just uploaded his interview with the guy who single-handedly solved homelessness in Austin. People deserve to be treated with dignity, especially the most vulnerable, least resourced, most traumatized members of our society.
I remember reading somewhere that 60% of homeless offered shelter refused it, so a material portion of the homeless are voluntarily unhoused. I wonder if SF would have enough beds though if 100% accepted shelter.
We’re just shuffling them around at this point, “at best” they’ll be more out of sight.
The main issue continues to be the lack of housing, something that is largely caused by the same NIMBYs that are no doubt cheering on these sweeps.
