Today, I was introduced to the newest member of our team. A 22 year old, with a rose tattooed next to her eye and a large spider tattooed across the top of her hand. Since when are visible tattoos acceptable for a professional setting?

Not acceptable, but people are going to do what they want to do without realizing there will be consequences.

RSM 1, I think the whole point of people in tech (not just CEOs) never wearing suits is because it’s not required to actually do the job. Just like tech CEOs, accountants don’t need to look a certain way in order to do their work.

It is important to understand that appearance is the first factor that inspires confidence. Especially with strangers that don’t know you. This is also what professional office attire is signalling. That’s why skimpy or revealing outfits are not acceptable. And we know this. We proved you can be just as effective doing your job in PJ due to WFH policies but we still dress up for client meetings etc. Anyway you slice it, visible body tattoos especially on the face will limit the success of people in client facing roles. We know this but like to gaslight ourselves into believing otherwise. I guess some people prefer experiential learning

likehelpfulfunny

It's a learned mentality tho. We were taught to think that certain ways of dressing were or were not professional. Over the last decade, this standard has substantially changed. Today, If you dress up too much, it can be seen as a negative. The older generations tend to have trouble adapting, but the newer generations are much more relaxed.

I'm the client now, not client-facing, and I don't care at all what the auditors are wearing. Neither does anyone on my team. I've been told that I dress too fancy just because I don't like wearing jeans lol

The skills are in her brain, not on her skin. Still, she will have to work harder than others to constantly prove she can do a good job. The same thing happens with minorities, unprivileged people, immigrants, etc. The only difference is that the tattoo was a choice. Race and nationality not.

like

you have to question whether or not the skills are in her brain because logically, tattoos don't make any sense - it a permanent marker on their skin that generally causes a distraction for others - the majority of the population does not have tattoos and generally associates tattoos with bikers or hippies
If she likes the design, put it on a piece of paper and hang it on a wall as art.

like

Your ideas are SERIOUSLY outdated and biased. I'm over 50 but constantly check my biases. Tattoos do not have the same social signalling that they did decades ago. It was once considered 'loose' if a woman had pierced ears and wore lipstick. Then it was considered 'slovenly' if a woman didn't. When I started work I had to wear hose or stockings with my skirts. Now I don't even OWN nylons. In 1982 it was not acceptable to have a face tattoo. But in 2025 it is. You should judge their performance and dedication, not a tattoo. You are doing the moral equivalent of judging someone based on their eyeshadow color.

I see no difference in a face tattoo or make-up (aka face paint). It’s your choice what you do to your body. MYOB

I find people with tattoos interesting and she's probably got some good stories to tell and she's probably really good at her job don't judge her by what you think she is judge you by actually what she is

Maybe they're a conservative employer, and need someone they can bully, just like the King of MAGA.

People damage a career adding tattoos in their body that everyone need to see it. I will not like a tattoo that shows in their face, I don’t think it’s appropriat, maybe you have to look your company policy related to that.

funny

Maybe you need to reevaluate your own life and character.

It's been acceptable since we started putting the Boomers out to pasture.

Who am I to judge, a tattoo is my least worry.

I think the face tattoo is too much but other tattoos are fairly normal

Maybe she can partner with the guy who wore farmer overalls and cowboy boots to the office (from a post a few months ago).

It depends on where you live, what industry you work it and YOUR age. It's right up there with none traditional hair colors. Tats, piercing and rainbow hair has become mainstream. Embrace it, you're missing out on working with a creative person.

ok! The comments passed the vibe check 🤏🏾🤏🏾🤏🏾 great work everyone. (Me and my giant hand tattoo secretly wish I knew who’s the Comptroller so I can be sure to NEVER work for that company, especially if it’s a nonprofit!)

My first trainer at Wells Fargo had blue hair and several facial piercings 8 years ago

I have to side with the OP. Personally, I would never hire this individual. There is enough together young professionals to choose from. Don’t have to settle for tattooed ones.

Why is someone with tattoos not together?

What if it was a birth mark or injury ? Would you pass the same judgement? Since when does someone’s appearance dictate their education level or ability to perform a job?
