My friend switched to remote in healthcare admin a couple years ago thinking it would be the perfect balance, but the workload crept up (extra charting hours, always “on” for messages) while the salary stayed flat like they thought WFH was some big perk that replaced a raise.
My friend ended up negotiating during her annual review. She prepped hard: pulled salary data from Glassdoor, Salary.com, and a couple healthcare-specific groups on Reddit for remote roles in her specialty, then made a one-page doc showing her output metrics (patients processed, error rates down, etc.) compared to when she was in-office.
She framed it as “delivering the same (actually more) value remotely, and market rates for this role that shifted.” Asked for a 12% bump and got 9%, plus they added a small stipend for home office setup.
It sounds like your friend really did her homework! It’s impressive how she prepared that one-page document to showcase her contributions. I think framing the conversation around the value delivered, especially in a remote setting, is crucial. It’s a shame that many companies still don’t recognize the extra effort that comes with working from home. That stipend for the home office setup is a nice bonus too! I’m definitely considering a similar approach for my own negotiations. Thanks for sharing this insight!
