trying to pivot into data science and trying to strengthen my coding problem solving skills but getting so frustrated 😩 “easy” problems on hackerrank are taking me forever (up to 30 min) to solve and that’s sometime just brute force with minimal optimization. i know i need to just practice more but any tips on studying smarter? i NEED to have a jupyter notebook open so i can troubleshoot but know i can’t use this as a crutch in the interviews

I’d spend more time on a site like Kaggle. That way you’ll get more DS experience with data analysis and ML and learn to code at the same time. Hackerrank/leetcode are ok for very technical interviews but most DS positions will give you a take-home test and care more about your DS thought process than if you’re the best coder.
Good coding is important but a lot of that comes from time and experience IMO. It feels silly for a company to hire a first-time DS expecting them to be amazing at coding.

Have you considered using copilot or chatgpt ?

like

to get the answers? yea but i still need to learn the mechanics behind the syntax and why things work the way they do. and i need to actually code it and think through each line

If you want to become a data scientist I would think the statistical concepts are more important and the coding aspect. You need to understand the fundamentals of statistics, and then you can leverage tools like chatgpt to help you with the actual coding

Lots of it you just need to memorize as tricks, but first you need to know the data structures.

If you wanna do some overkill prep, try Sedgwick's algos class on Coursera. It's in Java, but don't let that stop you, it's not that complicated to get going with. The class itself is very hard though. Algorithms is often an undergrad weeder course in CS (on par with OS and discrete math), and this particular Coursera class is on par or better than some at universities.

If you want something simpler, just go through some guides on basic data structures. Arrays, hash tables, etc. Leetcode has learning tracks for that stuff. Have coffee when you venture in, it's not too exciting....

Don't worry about that. I have been writing code for years and it still takes me ages to think of a solution for some problems. Some problems are easy, some are hard. Just try to get some practice. Also, like others mentioned, understand the concepts well and work on projects. It is unlikely that you will have to write some of the algorithms on hackerrank from scratch.

Hi,
My current company is going out of business next week. I am rushing to get my next job lined up (probably won’t happen in time but I’m trying my best). My question is: should I be honest about why I’m looking for a new job? Is it wrong to not share this info during my interviews? Is this situation going to affect my interview process somehow? Please share your thoughts and wisdom! Thanks!

In my current company stuck in a project where there's no learning scope, no growth and work culture is toxic. What would you do?
- You have your annual review with your manager
- They promote you up a level, you see your new shiny salary and title
- End meeting
- Get a DM to meet with manager the same week
- Get told that your title was “a mistake” and that you would keep the salary and but not the title. Due to a communication with upper leadership.
- 2 months later your title updates in Messaging channels and with HR with the leveled up title.
