As someone who has ugly cried in front of my managers... they will 100% act like it never happened

I just LOL’d at this!! So sorry!! I’m 44 and ugly cried in Feb to my manager…out of frustration that I’m not progressing. What I would say is own it!! You are human and lo and behold you have emotions. We are sub-consciously raised to behave as though we should operate as robots!! Honestly…OWN IT would be my biggest piece of advice. I can appreciate it may be embarrassing…but one day we’ll all be in a grave or pieces of ruble…in the grand scheme of things it really doesn’t matter! Thank you for attending my Ted-talk! It was purely from the heart!!

Don’t worry. This will be your manager tomorrow when they see you come in.

They don't care.. I've cried a few times..It's not a " omg cry" it's an angry cry.i only cry when I'm pissed.

REMEMBER. HR IS NOT YOUR FRIEND EITHER

like

I wouldn’t worry about it. I’ve done it early in my career, it happens. Just stay focused and figure out if that is the right spot for you. This economy isn’t the greatest but you can always do a lateral move once conditions improve.

like

Firstly, I’m sorry this happened to you. You will bounce back, but it will take time. I know, bc I went thru this as well. Deep breaths. Take time to reflect. And always remember back to this moment to prevent future occurrences of this. It will get better.

like

…I take it that the review was poor. Maybe they will take pity on you since it’s awkward for them too

I teared up in my one on one with my manager as well, utterly embarrassed but it's due to frustration after they rejected every one of my concerns about changing company cultures and upcoming objectives. Oh well, I shared my thoughts and they chose not to listen, they can choose to forget my tears too.

like

For sure. I’m 40 and started crying in my review when I found out my bonus would be way lower than I thought. Wouldn’t have been a big deal but I could not stop or get it under control for several minutes. So awful! I’m going through a divorce so apologized and blamed it on that….my boss was super gracious and ignored the tears and kept chatting to me till I got it together enough to leave her office and not be teary and flushed. Whatever. It happens. I honestly didn’t really think of it again.

like

It’s happened to me a couple of times. I hope your leader was supportive. The first time I had been busting ass for months and I thought doing very well and my leader tore me down hard and I was like six months pregnant so a hormonal mess. Just remember that feeling later and be a human when you’re on the other side of the table.

like

It happens! There are MUCH worse things you could have done. Hold your head high and carry on.

It’s okay. I am sure they’ll act like it never happened. Lol! I ugly cried during my one on one with a former boss because I haven’t been treated respectfully since a few weeks in by someone in the firm that it affected me overall. You know, high school drama carried on to corporate world by some folks.

At the end of the day, a department member of hers saw me and apologized for the bad treatment I have been receiving……. After this person got fired after a long time!

Thank you all for your helpful responses! It’s comforting to know that I’m not alone.

By the way, I spoke to my manager who said that I “shouldn’t take constructive criticism so tragically” 💀 While I know that I need to improve how I take constructive criticism, the use of the word tragically makes me feel even more self-conscious and embarrassed 😩

I feel this. I was told my show indicated “instability” and would be factored in promotion discussions. It was worse than tragic. Hold your head up high. You are only human. Doesn’t make you any less for having an unfavorable reaction.

Your manager prob felt just as awkward but if the review went bad and you cried as a result chances are it was because your boss did not have proper conversations about your progress during the year

I recently took a job with a top tier investment manager, which is a step up in title and responsibilities. I went through the typical “notice” conversations with my current employer. My boss, who was a significant supporter and mentor of me during my time at my current firm, told me that he doesn’t think my new firm is “long term” for me. Anyone ever get something like this before? It threw me off because I was hoping for his support, understanding that it’s tough for him temporarily

So, I just fired my first employee as a manager and I'm heartbroken. He was a great, great person but after 6 months on a PIP he just wasn't cutting it skills-wise. I know he was the provider of the household and his wife didn't have a job since she was raising three young ones. Needless to say, I had to take off because I felt terrible, sick to my stomach. How do you deal with firing guilt? Is that a thing? I can't help but feeling like I did something wrong.

Does anyone have tips regarding attending social events, such as happy hours with coworkers and express that drinking isn’t my preference?
With me being the only one on my team who doesn’t drink, it causes me to stick out, and others constantly question why I’m not drinking.
It kind of deters me from attending work events, but I know there’s a lot of benefitting in being around.

Could someone please suggest how to handle this situation?
My manager (Technology Director) sees me as an emerging thread to his position and stopped sharing details / trying to avoid including me in visible projects etc.,
FYI - His manager is the division head and Managing Director.
Why I think my manager tries to move me out?
- I am 18 YOE with a technically strong background
- Upper mgmt is starting to identify me as the backup for all systems. My manager tries to move me out since then

How do you deal with making mistakes at work? I’ve been doing good work lately but there’s one partner who thinks I’m mistake prone and I just made a mistake on something he asked me to do, but I corrected it quickly. However, there is public record of my mistake.
