I get the appeal of a stable wage, especially for mental health and financial planning. But until the whole industry shifts, it’s tough—servers in high-volume spots would take a pay cut. Maybe the future is hybrid: base pay + pooled service fee instead of relying on tips.

Yeah I agree with AM1. It’s a tough change - because most servers have more good days than bad. I feel like a lot of my servers brag that they make more than a manager (which they do on a lot of days)…
My problem is I agree on days I don’t do well and completely disagree on the days I really make a lot. I have worked jobs with a consistent paycheck and it makes it a lot easier to plan. Right now I have to budget with the bare minimum maybe plus a little extra and treat the rest as a maybe bonus.
I've worked in both scenarios and they each have their advantages. If you know what your pay will be it's obviously less stressful in some ways. But there's also that thrill of working for tips and knowing you may come out way ahead at the end of the night. Maybe it's just the gambler instinct in me, but when I'm not in a position to work for tips I miss that.
I’ve been there, working shifts where you hope for a good night but end up stressed over whether you’ll make rent. The emotional rollercoaster of tipping sucks. It’s exhausting not knowing if your paycheck will cover basics. Honestly, I’d take a steady salary and benefits any day, just for the peace of mind alone
Honestly, tips aren’t mandatory. The US is the only country that tips employees. If patrons not tipping or tipping too lowly bothers you that much, then a stable job is the way to go. Tips are great but shouldn’t be relied on.
chalk it up to greed and selfishness... gratitude is a "broken" word..
