UES is better if you want bougie brunch and easy access to Central Park, but let’s be real—both sides are just slightly different flavors of “rich people neighborhood.”
Easy access to park or CP for the matter is a common factor for UWS. UWS may actually win in this case given the access to both Riverside Park and CP.
Lived in both. UWS is better for park access ( Central Park and Riverside park) and better for running along the west side by the water. Way more contiguous.
UES has more restaurants, apartments are slightly cheaper ( East of Lex/Third Avenue).
Community Builder
UES restaurant scene is growing like crazy. I don’t even feel like I need to bother leaving to have a good time out.
Uws is nice but has gotten dirty. The food is not good and there aren’t as many conveniences.
Uws is ghetto after Covid
I really thought UWS until I read this. I’m surprised by the heavy UES bias. UES seems so boring and park-less (unless you’re rich around 5th Ave)! And I thought the restaurants on the UWS were better.
I don’t know where you had food in the UWS but almost all great restaurants have a location in the UES and there are a lot of UES establishments too. UWS in a way hasn’t grown or has been pro-business; hence there’s a constant lack of “nice” or “upscale” restaurants. Sure there are a lot of cheap eateries out here but the upscale vibe is really not there.
East side
Greenwich Village!
East Side. West side is just Jersey-lite.
Live in the UWS on CPW. Regret buying here before looking into UES. UES has more inventories, is cleaner, and generally cheaper for more lifestyle choices. UWS can feel like a dump with lots of the same “type” of people, lack of “younger” vibes, and skyrocketing RE prices. Value is quickly running out and I’d start looking in a few years probably in the UES (between 5th ave and 1st).
Lived in both for 5+ years and would say UES is more of a family friendly bubble, and UWS is more fun and cultural. Yes both have museums, access to CP and great restaurants but UWS has more performing arts, better movie theaters, universities and different demographics.
West is best!
Have lived in both. UES has better food, more nightlife, better options for shopping, and in general more going on around the 2nd/3rd Ave. area but east of 3rd Ave. feels dirtier and the older buildings are way more run down and ugly. The UES will definitely have a younger demographic between 3rd Ave. and the river than the UWS will as whole with the bars busy on the weekends packed with 20s/30s crowd. The area between 5th and Lexington is very wealthy and clean but is very dull.
The UWS below 86th has a lot more charm than the UES (especially east of Broadway to the park). Wide sidewalks, friendly neighbors, pretty tree lined streets, and the brownstones are very charming. The whole neighborhood is mostly families and older people with very little of a nightlife or food scene but the grocery options are amazing. You are way closer to Central Park generally on the UWS than UES (unless you are super rich and live west of Lexington on the UES) and Riverside Park is gorgeous and beats Carl Schurz by a mile. It really feels like the parks are the focal points of the neighborhood and are part of it. The east side doesn’t have that feeling as much. Overall it has a very laid back and neighborhoody feel where you enjoy walking around to take it all in where the UES feels more corporate and sterile.
Both have their pros and cons but if I were to buy for the long-term I’d pick UWS over UES just for the charm and park access over all else. Especially if you are a runner, having Central Park and Riverside Park/West Side Highway right there is a huge plus. Also the 1/2/3 beats the 4/5/6 by a long shot.
I am partial to Eastside, I love the mixture of eateries, free events, and lifestyle. Upper West is great too just a little more conservative. I liked both but had more fun at events in Eastside. So, it would depend on what you are after.
UES feels cozier to me. UWS is overblown.
I’ve lived in both for several years each. UWS no question
