I talked to the HM and she said the recruiter can't retract an offer without the HM approval. So they countered back and I accepted. I start in 2 weeks.
Hey Brother, can you get me a job in Amazon? Would be a great help!
Consider this a blessing. I think you now know everything you need to know about the hiring manager and team.
Chief
Something like this happened to me once (not Amazon) and I said I was sorry to hear that, and asked to negotiate other things (bonus, stock, etc) if the salary wasn’t negotiable. I ended up getting a bigger bonuses, more money for relocation and a slightly (10k) larger base.
How far apart was their offer and your counter?
Part of negotiation is being willing to walk away and that goes for both sides.
AC1 - I mean…math is math. 50k more TC is a huge jump regardless of where it comes from. People act like RSUs /equity etc is like candy and easier to give away but as someone who has started/sold a company I can tell you that is not the case. And even if Amazon had a bajillion to give away it doesn’t make sense to bring TC higher if it’s not in alignment with market value or current team TC, etc.
Is there any update here OP? Curious how this panned out.
They may have other just as qualified applicants or your offer was too far outside the range they are able to offer. If they can’t pay you want you want, it’s better to walk away anyway. They can’t hire you and risk you making more than your supervisor. Your TC may have put into the next level and that’s a bad place to be.
Can u share the numbers?
Be grateful. I think you may have dodged a bullet. Remember the articles about how Amazon encourages employees to knock each other down? I used to live on the bus line to the Amazon headquarters and actually witnessed it. Most everyone I have met who works for them hates their job.
The boss of Amazon didn't become the richest man in the world by chance.
Rule #1: Don't counter the mighty Amazon who have an endless line of people trying to work there.
Don't forget, sometimes you can price yourself out of a role. They might have some flexibility to make you a Senior this or Lead that but if you go outside the brackets for the role, that probably means they'll need to backfill it with someone else as your responsibilities in the higher role may well be different to what you originally applied for.
It doesn’t sound like they have receded their offer. If you want the job, let them know you are happy to take the position and ask for a greater sign-on bonus.
Should have gave a number but that is weird
I did give a number but I never said "it's this or nothing" and I ended by asking if there's room to negotiate.
In the first sentence, it seems like he wants to stick with the original offer. You should have negotiated other things like bonuses and other benefits. The last sentence sounds like he wants to end the negotiation.
Something I’ve learned is that HMs can (wrongfully) want to keep their org costs low to allow for more headcount. The nay should come from TA, NOT the HM.
What r u joining as ?
