Wanted to get some thoughts on potential job change. Currently in house at a large asset manager. I have an offer from a small GP that would require a move, but is about 60% more pay and includes carry (currently not getting) plus higher title and GC track. My concern is the GP is very niche and they’re likely expecting 24/7 availability. Would being at a super niche GP for example hurt future job opportunities?

To each their own, but 24/7 doesn’t seem that appealing. We are only granted one opportunity to live our lives…

24/7 why? refuse to accept unless they dial back the hours to 9 to 5 and 5 days a week

funny

Thanks everyone!

24/7? It’s big law hours

Hard no. 1 life. Time is a resource you can’t change. Keep looking. I get mad when I’m on past 5.

Only you can answer if the money is more important than the time.

I worked maybe 5 hours this week. I cant imagine doing biglaw hours again.

Might as well just go to big law at that point.

If you want to be a GC, then being in a very niche area may hurt your chances when the Board/EC are considering you.

Also, be careful with a big bump in pay that require a move. Sometimes, the bump in pay is due to cost of living and in reality you may not be getting a raise at all.

Is it too late in our lives to jump into a mortgage?

So my fiancée and I are relatively late in terms of finally landing well paying jobs and being able to save money instead of living paycheck to paycheck. We’re both 36 and currently rent a 2 bedroom in NY and have a combined savings of $35,000 which she wants to use as a down payment on a condo. I kinda just wanna continue saving while renting. I also literally just started contributing to my 401K so I’m also late in the game for that too.

After you moved in-house, how did you get more comfortable reviewing contracts or counseling on issues you weren’t super familiar with? I was very specialized at my law firm and took a similarly specialized role in-house….but I still get requests to mark-up types of agreements that I never touched at my firm. I’ve been trying to find CLEs to get up to speed, but I’m wondering if this is generally something that gets more comfortable with time…
